Shadyside Sweeps Bridgeport For First Win

BRIDGEPORT -- The Shadyside Tigers scored their first win of the season Thursday in dominant fashion, hitting the road against the Bridgeport Bulldogs and leaving town with a 25-6, 25-10, 25-8 sweep.
Shadyside's front row gave the Tigers a big boost, with Lily Donaldson (five kills), Ella Mercer (five kills, one ace, one block) and Addasyn Melanko (six kills, five aces) all turning in good performances for the Tigers (1-2).
Shadyside head coach Eric Mercer was pleased with his team's attitude top-to-bottom.
"Really proud of their effort," Mercer said. "We came off of a tough loss earlier this week, a five-setter, and it was really nice to see them rebound and play solidly, be disciplined on defense, hit smart shots on offense.
"It was just nice to see them work hard and play together as a team, we really appreciate that."
Setter Ella Weeks finished with 21 assists along with four aces. Ava Mercer matched Weeks with four aces, and Brooklynn Joseph had three. Joseph's seven digs also led the team.
Shadyside returns home for their next game, facing River (3-0).
The Bulldogs (0-3) will try to regroup for their next game, remaining at home to face Steubenville Catholic (1-2).
"I think we just got in our heads in the warm-up," Bridgeport head coach Christina Boyd said. "I think we came ready to go, but saw a little bit of competition and just kind of made a decision right there to just already be down. Really hoping that when we play this Saturday, we really turn it around and bring what we got."
