RICHMOND - For the second straight week, high school football has a Thursday night game scheduled as Monroe Central treks to the Unified Sports Complex at Edison for a 7 o'clock kickoff.
The Seminoles (2-0) enter the battle following victories over Liberty Union (33-12) and at Bellaire (29-14) while the Wildcats (0-2) have wound up on the wrong end of decisions at Coshocton (24-21) and at Carrollton (23-6).
This will be the third meeting between the schools, with Edison holding a 2-0 with wins in 2022 and 2023.
On Friday night, five Ohio-side teams will look to run their records to 3-0 - those being Martins Ferry, River, Shadyside, Toronto and Union Local.
- The Purple Riders welcome Brashear (0-1) to the Dave Bruney Football Complex at Purple Rider Stadium.
Martins Ferry owns lop-sided triumphs at Mt. Gilead (42-19) and Columbus Mifflin (60-6). The Bulls (0-1) were blanked 55-0 at Cupples Stadium by visiting McKeesport.
This will be the first-ever clash between the schools.
- The Pilots host Oak Glen (1-0) at Martin Flannery Field in Hannibal in the sixth all-time meeting. The Golden Bears hold a 3-2 edge in the series, but they haven't played since 2004.
River has handily defeated Portsmouth Notre Dame (41-6) and Buckeye Local (40-8), both on the road.
Oak Glen blanked Weir (35-0) in its opener.
- The Tigers have opened some eyes with their unblemished start as Buckeye Local (0-2) visits Fleming Field. Shadyside has rolled at East Palestine (49-13) and at home against Southern Local (49-0) thus far, while the Panthers have lost at Bellaire (49-13) and at home to River.
Buckeye Local, however, holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series, including a 20-14 nail-biter in overtime last season at World War II Memorial Stadium in Yorkville.
- The Red Knights will make their home debut at Clarke Hinkle Stadium when Brookfield (2-0) visits. Toronto has secured wins at Southern Local (33-20) and at Newcomerstown (27-20).
The Warriors, of Trumbull County, have wins over Hubbard (14-7) and Springfield (35-18).
- The Jets are coming off an impressive win at St. Clairsville (40-21) after blanking Warren Local (34-0) on the road in week 1. They welcome Indian Creek (1-1) to Jets Field in Morristown. The Redskins defeated Cambridge (49-36) but fell to East Liverpool (48-14) last week.
Other games in the Buckeye State have Bridgeport (0-2) traveling to Salineville to meet Southern Local (0-2); Harrison Central (1-1) welcomes Strasburg (2-0) to Wagner Field in Cadiz; and St. Clairsville (0-2) hosts Beaver Local (2-0) at Red Devil Stadium. The Beavers-Red Devils kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
In the Mountain State, Cameron, Valley and Wheeling Central all look to start 2-0.
- The Dragons are coming off an impressive 42-0 rout of host Clay-Battelle and travel to Thomas C. West Stadium in Pine Grove to face the Lumberjacks, who defeated Tygarts Valley (20-8) in their opener.
This will be the 61st all-time meeting, with Cameron holding a 36-24 advantage. The Dragons have also won 11 straight in the series, 13 of the last 15 and 24 of the last 29.
- The Maroon Knights rolled past visiting Perry Traditional (50-8) and will welcome Fort Frye (2-0) to Bishop Schmitt Field on the campus of Wheeling University. The Cadets have Wheeling Central's number as they hold a 4-1 all-time mark in the series, with the West Virginians win coming way back in 1980.
Fort Frye posted a 40-0 shellacking last year in Beverly.
In other games, Madonna (0-1) hosts Van (0-1) at Weir High School's Jimmy Carey Stadium; Magnolia (0-1) welcomes Wirt County (0-0) to Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Memorial Stadium; and Steubenville Catholic (0-2) heads west to Zanesville to meet Rosdecrans (0-2).
There are no Saturday games slated.
