WARSAW, OH — The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights girls soccer team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 2-1 win over the Amherst Steele Comets during the River View High School Labor Day Classic.
The Knights led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal by junior Elizabeth Steele. Amherst Steele tied it in the middle portion of the second half, but junior Loni Kusic tallied on a rebound to put the Knights back on top.
Senior keeper Bella Fitzsimmons made that stand up with her work in net. All told, she stopped eight shots. Elah Konkle and Maddie Steele were charted for assists in the game.
Kusic and Elizabeth Steele were named the game’s co-MVPs.
Wheeling Central 3, Nitro 0
WHEELING — The Knights shutout Class AAA power Nitro on Saturday.
Kusic had a pair of goals and an assist, while Konkle had a goal and a pair of assists.
Fitzsimmons recorded four saves.
GOLF
St. C. Boys Golf Places 3rd At Dover
DOVER - St. Clairsville placed third in a loaded Dover Invitational on Saturday at the Union Country Club in boys high school golf action.
The Red Devils fired a four-man total of 310, finishing behind River View (300) and Hoover (307).
Junior Beau Mooney and freshman Jackson Conway both shot 77 to lead St. Clairsville. Mavrik Malin and Ryan Mooney both carded 78s.
BOYS SOCCER
Steubenville 8, Tri-Valley 0
STEUBENVILLE - Big Red (3-1) goalkeeper JJ Lamantia made eight saves in recording the shutout.
Landon Bowers scored three goals and added two assists. Chase Beall had a pair of net-finders and a helper, while Joel Elliot, Justin Pathakamuri and Dom Pietro also scored goals.
Elliot, Wells Gage and Christopher Jones added assists.
Steubenville travels to Oak Glen on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Wheeling Central 1, Frankfort 1
WHEELING — In a meeting of the top ranked teams in Class A/AA, The Maroon Knights and Falcons played to a draw Saturday.
The Knights led much of the way thanks to a goal by freshman Luca Cipriani, but Frankfort tallied in the latter portion of the second half.
Tino Sperlazza was strong in net for the Knights, including making a late save to preserve the tie.
VOLLEYBALL
Wheeling Central def. Monroe Central, 3-0
WOODSFIELD — The Maroon Knights won their second straight contest thanks to sweeping the Seminoles on Saturday, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20.
Sophomore Teagan Peters had 11 kills for the winners, while her sister, Remy, added eight kills to go along with 11 digs. Morgan Miehle was charted for six kills and nine digs.
Senior Olivia Stephens notched four aces and a team-high 16 digs.
