High School Roundup: Maroon Knights, Purple Riders Notch Victories

MORGANTOWN — The Wheeling Central girls soccer squad struck early and often en route to a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Morgantown on Thursday.

The Knights (5-1) had built a six-goal lead nine minutes into the contest.

Central saw six different players score. Recording a pair of goals were Elah Konkle, Loni Kusic, Elizabeth Steele and Maddie Steele. Meredith Komorowski and Addi Hanson also tallied.

Assists were credited to Kusic (3), Elizabeth Steele (2), Konkle, Aylin Yoho, Berklee Heller, Mackenzie Ernest and Lily Mullin.

Central returns home on Saturday against Nitro, starting at 11 a.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Wheeling Central def. Shadyside

WHEELING — The Maroon Knights put the brakes on a four-game skid with a sweep of the invading Tigers, 25-18, 25-6 and 25-12.

Central (6-4) was led on the stat sheet by junior Morgan Miehle had 13 kills, while senior Remy Peters had 11 kills and seven aces. Teagan Peters had five kills. Senior Olivia Stephens had 14 digs and junior Chloe Groome donated 10 digs

Martins Ferry def. Barnesville

MARTINS FERRY -- The Purple Riders swept the visiting Shamrocks on Thursday, 25-17, 25-14, 25-10.

Giana Chirpas tallied 16 kills for Ferry, as well as five digs and four aces.

Maddie Lucas and Nicole Hammerquist each had six kills, Lucas adding 10 digs. Addie Simpson had seven kills

SJ Koller was the team leader in digs with 24. Olivia Harkness was the team leader in assists with 33 and served up six aces.

Marietta def. River

MARIETTA -- The Pilots fell on the road vs. the Tigers, Marietta claiming the match in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15.

Hallie Hammel had 13 kills and Mallarie Maddy had 12 kills and 14 digs. Aubrey Fetty led the team in digs with 17 and Gracen Reed tallied 22 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Steubenville 5 Brooke 1

STEUBENVILLE - Landon Bowers scored four goals and added an assist as Big Red (2-1) blew past visiting Brooke at Harding Stadium.

Chase Beall tallied the other Steubenville net-finder, with Cedric Peckens and Tommy Lucas earning assists.

Goalkeeper JJ Lamantia made three saves.

Jacob High scored for the Bruins. Bronson Pack had 12 saves.

The match was called with 25 minutes left in the second half because of weather.
