CADIZ - The St. Clairsville boys' golf team kept on keeping on Thursday as it captured the rain-delayed Ohio Division II Sectional Tournament at the Cadiz Country Club. The 18-hole event had been scheduled for Monday, but inclement weather pushed it back three days.
The Red Devils shot a blistering four-player total of 308, which was 28 shots better than second-place West Muskingum. Also qualifying for next week's District Tournament at EagleSticks Golf Course in Zanesville, were Steubenville (341) and Martins Ferry (343). The Purple Riders edged Barnesville and Union Local who both shot 344.
The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to district action.
St. Clairsville, which won its sixth straight sectional championship, was led by senior medalist Mavrik Malin with a 2-over-par 74 (39-35). Junior Ryan Mooney tied for second with Beaver Local freshman Eli Stewart at 75. Twin brother Beau tied for fifth with a 78 and junior Mason Conway checked in with an 81, which was good enough to tie for ninth.
Freshman Jackson Conway carded an 83.
Leading Big Red were seniors Jaggar Rawson (79) and Andrew Matzorkis (85); sophomore Patrick Jenkins (87) and senior Noah Kikiko (90). Sophomore Gino Scaffidi finished at 91.
Martins Ferry was led by sophomores Dylan Pielech and Leo Zambori who both fired 83. Classmate Connor Best had an 88 and senior Easton Mace an 89. Senior Hunter Shutler finished at 92.
Other local qualifiers were Barnesville's Blaine Thompson (77); Harrison Central's Cash Meadows (78) and Union Local's Landen Hanasky (81).
The District Tournament is set for Monday, with the top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament to be held at the Firestone Country Club in Akron.
The Red Devils only state tournament appearance came in 2024.
Weir Prevails At Woodview
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Red Riders topped Madonna, Cambridge and Oak Glen in a golf quartet Thursday at Woodview Golf Course.
Weir's 167 team score was spearheaded by Guy Meneely, who was match medalist with a 39 on his card. Aiden Ferguson and Landon Donaldson each carded 41 for the Red Riders and Jonny Horstman finished at 46.
Madonna finished second at 190, Cambridge in third at 193, and Oak Glen in fourth at 197 as a team.
Next up Weir is the Hancock County Cup where they will face Brooke, Madonna and Oak Glen at Woodview Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 28.
BOYS SOCCER
Steubenville Powers Past Monarchs
STEUBENVILLE - Landon Bowers and Chase Beall each had three goals and two assists as Steubenville completed its regular-season sweep of John Marshall in boys' high school soccer, 8-2, Thursday night at Harding Stadium.
Justin Pathakamuri and Kaden Sliva had the other Big Red goals, while Tommy Lucas and Gabe Loot had helpers.
JJ Lamantia made a pair of saves for Steubenville.
Braydn Ruckman tallied both goals for the Monarchs. Manuel Ramos charted nine saves for JM.
High Records Brace For Brooke
MORGANTOWN — Jacob High scored two goals for the Bruins in a hard-fought 3-1 road victory over the University Hawks on Thursday.
Jacob Johnson scored Brooke’s other goal in the win, while Jaxon Johnson, Zachary Monk and Giacomo Dall’omo each recorded assists.
Bronson Pack snatched up 13 saves in-goal.

Wheeling Central def Weir, 3-1
WEIRTON — The Maroon Knights improved to 15-4 on the season by virtue of winning their 10th straight by scores of 25-13, 20-25, 25-15 and 25-15.
Remy Peters had 11 kills, while Jackie Maxwell posted 10 kills and five blocks. Teagan Peters added seven kills and six aces.
Chloe Groome recorded 28 assists and 10 digs. Olivia Stephens recorded 12 assists.
