High School Roundup: Wheeling Central Advances Through OVAC Semis; Crusaders Fall Just Short

WHEELING -- The Wheeling Central boys soccer team will have the chance to defend their OVAC 1A-3A championship trophy after breezing by No. 4 Shenandoah 7-0.

For the top-seeded Maroon Knights, theres was an egalitarian effort as six Central players scored. Owen Mullin led the way with two goals, while each of JD Schoolcraft, Jaden Bosley, Luke Hevener, Cooper Crews and Mason Shumaker each had one.

Hevener had three assists for the Knights while Schoolcraft, Cooper Crews and Maddox Ochap each had one.

Columbiana 1, Steubenville Catholic 0

COLUMBIANA -- Geoffrey Malcolmson scored with a minute left in the game to lift Columbiana to a 1-0 win over Steubenville Catholic Central in an OVAC Class 1-3A semifinal at the Ward Athletic Complex.

The Clippers and Crusaders played to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 17.

Columbiana (7-3-1) will play the winner of Shenandoah and Wheeling Central Catholic at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Brooke 5, Trinity Christian 1

WELLSBURG - Five different Bruins - Giacomo Dall'omo, Mason Dewitt, Elijah Sparks, Jaxon Johnson and Jacob Johnson - scored goals as they defeated the Warriors on Paul 'Bud' Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.

Jacob High added two assists while Jaxon Johnson and Cooper Wiley had a helper each.

Goalkeeper Bronson Pack made three saves.

VOLLEYBALL

River def. Bellaire 3-0

HANNIBAL -- The Pilots defended their homecourt on Tuesday, grounding the visiting Big Reds 25-16, 25-21, 25-10.

Hallie Hammel and Mallarie Maddy occupied their usual roles above the net for River, Hammel tallying 21 kills and Maddy 20. Hammel also had 19 digs, Maddy 17.

Aubrey Fetty had three aces and 10 digs for the Jets.

Toronto def. Steubenville 3-0

STEUBENVILLE – Toronto converted down the stretch to win the first two sets before pulling away in the third en route to sweeping Big Red, 25-22, 25-20, 25-11, Tuesday night inside the Crimson Center.

For Toronto, Jayna Reeves recorded 12 kills, one block and one ace, Addison Dobbs added 15 kills and one ace and Danielle Sutherin delivered 32 assists and nine aces.

Barnesville's Little Moving On

ZANESVILLE - The Shamrocks' Kennedy Little shot an 81 Tuesday to finish fourth in the Division III sectional tournament at Jaycees Golf Course.

She qualifies for the district tournament next week at the Cambridge Country Club.

BOYS GOLF

Buckeye Local Sweeps Quad

EAST LIVERPOOL - Spencer Grew earned medalist honors with a 39 as the Panthers fired a 174 at Historic Highlands Golf Course to top Wellsville (200), Southern Local (216) and Lisbon David Anderson (231).

Buckeye Local's Dugan Dobrovich was medalist runnerup with a 42, which was one shot better than teammate Jacob Porter.

Weir Captures Tri

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Red Riders' Aiden Ferguson's 37 led all players as they defeated Hancock County rivals Madonna and Oak Glen at Woodview Golf Course.

Weir (20-6) finished at 154, with the Blue Dons shooting 169 and the Golden Bears 173.
