High School Roundup: Wheeling Central Downs River; Weir Stakes Victory vs. Northern Rivals

HANNIBAL -- Wheeling Central's volleyball squad took a road victory back up the Ohio River Scenic Byway on Monday, defeating River 25-23, 25-14, 26-28, 25-21.

River's Hallie Hammel led the Pilots with 22 kills and 25 digs, while Mallarie Maddy piled up 24 kills and 18 digs.

Gracen Reed had 26 assists for the Pilots; Karly Showalter had 16.

Aubrey Fetty led the way for River's defensive efforts with 31 digs.

Weir edges out Oak Glen and Brooke

WEIRTON -- The Red Riders hosted the Golden Bears and Bruins on Monday, Weir posting a 162 team score to edge out Oak Glen (165) and Brooke (174).

Weir's Evan Baker was match medalist, shooting even with a 36. Aiden Ferguson carded a 40, Guy Meneely carded a 41, and Landon Donaldson a 45 to find the Red Riders' team total.

Gannon Cline led Oak Glen with a 37. Max Malinky led Brooke with a 39.

Next up for the Red Riders is a duel against East Liverpool on Wednesday, September 16 at East Liverpool Country Club.
