WHEELING -- Caldwell, the seat of Noble County, earned a crown fit for nobility on Tuesday, capturing the OVAC 1A/2A golf title at Oglebay's Crispin Golf Course to become back-to-back champions.
Caldwell dominated, finishing 28 strokes ahead of second-place Shadyside, finishing with a team total of 322. Cameron Sidwell (77), Gentry Brown (78) and Jake Laswell (79) led the way for Caldwell, both making the All-OVAC 1A/2A team.
Rounding out the first-place effort was Jax Secrest (88).
In second, Shadyside put together a team total of 350, paced by Wyatt Parr (83) and Gavin Nelson (83) along with Caleb Husek (87) and Aaron Pacifico (97).
Conotton Valley came in third and Madonna in fourth, and in fifth were the Bridgeport Bulldogs, who counted amongst their ranks the conference tournament medalist, Carson Sauvageot.
Sauvageot carded a 76 to finish one stroke ahead of Caldwell's Sidwell.
The junior was excited to be taking home medalist honors from a field of his peers which numbered 60, including the triumphant Bulldog.
"It was a great day," Sauvageot said. "Definitely left some shots out there, but all glory to God, I wouldn’t be here without him. He’s done a lot for me."
"I’ve definitely put a lot of practice in through the offseason, so have my teammates. I’ve tried to get them out as much as possible practicing, and doing what they need to be doing."
"He’s put a lot of work in since his freshman year," Bridgeport head coach Donnie Cash said. "He plays almost every day. He deserves it. He keeps grinding either at the driving range and he got a membership up here where he plays, and he plays other courses as well. He’s definitely put a lot of work in since his freshman year. I’m glad to see it pay off for him."
Joining Sauvageot on the All-OVAC team was Sidwell, Brown, Laswell, Conotton Valley's Kaden Leggett and Madonna's Evan Kaczmarek, both of whom shot 81.
Sauvageot's 76 was five-over Par at Crispin. The Bulldog says he got better in the back nine.
"I had, I think, two birdies, both on the back nine. Shot even on the back, and 41 on the front, so definitely need to improve my front nine, but back nine was pretty solid.
"Maybe I just wasn’t fully settled and a little rattled, but I was able to rein it back in on the back nine, secure the win."
"I think he got off to a great start when he chipped in for birdie on number one," Cash said. "His chipping has gotten a lot better, played well, held off and won by one stroke. Overall, he played a solid game today and a solid round, and I’m glad he won."
