YOUNGSTOWN -- Steubenville Big Red suffered their second defeat of the season on Thursday as the Youngstown Fighting Irish came back from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to defend their home turf, 44-40, inside Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium.
Steubenville led by 11 with less than eight minutes left in the game, 40-29, after an errant Ursuline punt ended up recovered by Big Red in the end zone for a score, but the Irish struck back quickly, a Pat Reardon touchdown pass to Ethan Sandusky cutting Steubenville's lead to 40-37 with under four minutes in the game. A 15-yard touchdown run by Vinnie Fecko served as the go-ahead score with 2:39 in the game.
Steubenville marched down to the red zone and had a shot at the end zone, but a fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete.
Ursuline led 29-27 going into the fourth quarter, but Colton Henderson ripped off a 24-yard touchdown run early in the final period to give Big Red the lead, an advantage that Steubenville's special teams extended later in the quarter.
The touchdown rush was Henderson's third of the game. Big Red also scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Santino Haney to Stephen McShan in the first quarter, and a seven-yard touchdown run by James Turner in the second quarter.
Ursuline led 22-21 at the half.
Steubenville will look to get back on-track when they return to Harding Stadium to face Health Sciences/Buffalo Academy of Science/Global Concepts (HSBASGC) on Oct. 9.
