CAMERON - The Cameron Dragons gave undefeated East Hardy all it could handle Friday night, taking a 21-20 lead with just 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before the Cougars connected on a late touchdown pass to escape with a 28-21 victory.
Cameron battled throughout the contest against an East Hardy team that entered the matchup unbeaten. The Dragons showed determination and put themselves in position for a major upset, but East Hardy’s late scoring drive proved to be the difference.
The Dragons’ offense was led by a spectacular performance from Soier Reed, who put together an outstanding night on the ground. Reed carried the football seven times for 142 yards, averaging an impressive 20.3 yards per carry. He found the end zone three times on touchdown runs of 21, 55, and 4 yards.
Marshall Holland contributed 14 carries for 45 yards while adding one reception for five yards. Griffen Miller recorded two carries for two yards, while Cale Winters added one carry for one yard and caught two passes for nine yards.
On special teams, Owen Whisler successfully converted two of his three point-after attempts, helping keep Cameron within striking distance throughout the game.
East Hardy ultimately made the final play when it mattered most, scoring on a touchdown pass with under 50 seconds left to secure the win and preserve its undefeated season.
Moorefield 37, Weir 14
WEIRTON -- The Red Riders (0-9) got off to a good start on Friday night, but it was the visiting Yellow Jackets that finished strong.
After Weir led in the second quarter, the visitors scored the final 30 unanswered points to hand the hosts their 28th consecutive setback Friday night at Jimmy Carey Stadium.
After falling behind 7-0 late in the first quarter on a long Moorefield TD run, the Red Riders answered back with a 51-yard Nick DiMatteis to Landon Haught pass, catch and run. A bad snap on the extra point left the visitors on top, 7-6.
After the defense got a fourth-down stop, the Red Riders took the lead, this time Tyrek Petteway breaking a 38-yard TD run to put Weir in the lead, then Haught hauling in a two-point pass from DiMatteis to make it 14-7 Red Riders.
It was all Yellow Jackets from there, however, as the visitors answered on the next drive, marching down the field, scoring on a short run then converting a two-point run to re-take the lead, 15-14, at halftime.
After the break, Moorefield out-scored the Red Riders 22-0 in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Moorefield, now 5-4, entered the week just inside the Class AA playoff race and will look to clinch a playoff berth next week against Berkeley Springs.
The Red Riders close the season with a trip down W.Va. 2 to take on Brooke in the annual county line rivalry clash.
