MARTINS FERRY - State-ranked Martins Ferry did nothing to tarnish its volleyball ranking Tuesday night with a sweep of visiting Monroe Central inside Tolbert Gymnasium.
The Purple Riders (18-0) recorded their 13th 3-0 victory by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-13. They were ranked No. 2 in the latest Ohio Division V poll behind Coldwater.
Giana Chirpas led the way with 18 kills and Nicole Hammerquist added a dozen to spark Martins Ferry. Olivia Harkness charted 28 assists and five service aces, while SJ Koller had 17 digs. The Lucas Cousins - Maddie and Gracie - finished with seven kills and nine digs and six digs, respectively.
Martins Ferry had a tough task Wednesday when it ventures to Oak Glen in what could be a preview of an OVAC Class 4A Tournament matchup. The Purple Riders have sewn up the No. 1 seed, while the Golden Bears are No. 3 behind St. Clairsville.
River Sweeps Magnolia
HANNIBAL -- The Pilots volleyball squad moved to 13-6 on the season Tuesday with a clean sweep against visiting Magnolia, winning in three sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14.
Mallarie Maddy shelled the visiting Blue Eagles with 21 kills for the Pilots, while the junior also led the team with 15 digs.
Hallie Hammel finished with nine kills and 14 digs for River.
Gracen Reed's 17 assists and Karly Showalter's 12 accounted for most of River's distributing efforts Tuesday, while Showalter also nailed an impressive eight service aces. Hammel had three aces of her own, and Reed and Larissa Salisbury each had two.
BOYS SOCCER
Steubenville 2, Marietta 0
MARIETTA – Chase Beall tallied a goal and an assist as the Big Red boys’ soccer team scored two early goals en route to a 2-0 victory against Marietta Tuesday night on the road.
Landon Bowers also delivered a goal for Big Red (11-3-1).
Bowers scored the first goal for the Red-and-Black in the first minute off a throw-in from Beall making the score 1-0. The boys from Jefferson County tacked on another one four minutes later when Beall scored directly off his own corner kick to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Big Red goalie JJ Lamantia made 10 saves on the night.
“It was a great win before the tournament,” Big Red head coach Greg Bowers said. “The game had a tournament atmosphere with Marietta being 6-1-6 and ranked in the top 15 in Division III. I’m proud of all of the boys. They dug deep in a highly-physical contest.”
Big Red is scheduled to play Jefferson County rival Edison at noon Saturday at home on Reno Saccoccia Field inside historic Harding Stadium. The game will be played on Big Red’s Senior Day.
GIRLS SOCCER
Steubenville 2, Oak Glen 1
STEUBENVILLE – The game was scoreless for nearly 70 minutes before Big Red delivered a pair of goals less than five minutes apart before holding on and defeating the Golden Bears, 2-1, Tuesday night on Reno Saccoccia Field inside historic Harding Stadium.
After falling behind by two goals, the girls from Hancock County netted a goal a little more than four minutes later to draw within a goal, however, the visitors were unable to find the equalizer before time expired.
Senior standout Gianna Thomas netted a goal and an assist to lead the way offensively for the Red-and-Black, while sophomore Brynn Bowers recorded a goal.
Junior Jodeci Green made 10 saves in goal for the victors.
Freshman Bailey Watts tallied the lone goal of the game for the visitors. Senior Angelina Polly produced the assist.
Senior Camryn Richards made some key saves in goal throughout the night for the Golden Bears. Richards ended the night with 12 saves.
