High School Roundup: Wheeling Central, St. Clairsville Win On The Gridiron

WINDBER, Pa. -- Wheeling Central (3-3) climbed back to the .500 mark thanks to a solid 28-0 win over Windber Area (4-3) Friday evening.

The Maroon Knights rode a solid ground attack that accumulated 345 yards and accounted for all four touchdowns.

Senior Dustin Sanner rushed for a career-high 201 yards on 17 carries and scored three touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 7-yard run and added 1-yard plunge before halftime.

Senior Clay Petry was true on both point-after kicks en route to a 14-0 lead.

The Knights extended the margin early in the third when senior quarterback Nico Kusic scored from two yards out. That drive was set up by a Kusic interception.

Sanner capped the scoring early in the fourth when he ripped off a 69-yard touchdown.

Petry converted both PAT kicks in the second half as well.

The Maroon Knights return home to Bishop Schmitt Field on the Wheeling University campus next Friday when Nitro visits for a 6 p.m. start.

St. Clairsville 34, Bellaire 28

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Ian McLean's 25-yard run late in the fourth quarter lifted the Red Devils (2-5) over the visiting Big Reds (4-3) on Homecoming 2026 at Red Devil Stadium.

McLean finished with 84 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He also caught four passes for 77 yards.

Brody Clifford passed for 171 yards and two scores on 10 of 15. He connected with Dalton Neff from 32 and hit Hunter Orum from 5 yards out. Clifford also picked up 76 yards on the ground on seven totes. Orum carried 13 times for 76 yards and reached the end zone on a 6 yard run.

Bellaire received 206 yards and three touchdowns on the ground from Trevor Dowery. He had scoring runs of 5, 35 and 1, with the last tying the game at 28.

Raekwon Pettigrew also ran 42 yards for a TD.

St. Clairsville received two interceptions from Luke Schafer in his return from an injury.

Barnesville 34, Fort Frye 7

BEVERLY - The Shamrocks (7-0) set up another meetin' of the unbeaten next week with Martins Ferry as Trey Toliver ran for 227 yards and scored four touchdowns against the previously undefeated Cadets (6-1).

Tolliver scored on runs of 2, 48, 37 and 48.

Colt Carpenter had 47 yards rushing and found the end zone on a 4-yard run. He also completed 8 of 10 passes for 85 yards.

Martins Ferry 49, Buckeye Local 7

YORKVILLE - The Purple Riders (7-0) remained perfect as Colby Kropka threw four touchdown passes and Walkquem Cox ran for three more scores as they routed the Panthers (0-7) at World War II Memorial Stadium.

Kropka connected for scoring tosses or 55 and 35 yards to Jakori Cox, while also finding Elijah Roby for a 75-yard strike. Jacob Ball caught a 25 yarder.

Walkquem Cox had scoring runs of 3, 80 and 50.

Jacob Theaker booted all seven PATs.

Martins Ferry welcomes Barnesville to the Dave Bruney Football Complex on Friday.

University 31, Linsly 6

MORGANTOWN -- The Cadets fell on the road to the Hawks on Friday to move to 2-3 on their season.

George Mamakos pounded the rock for 92 rushing yards and Linsly's touchdown, which came in the third quarter.

Chris Upton caught two passes for the Cadets for 21 yards. RJ Zizelsberger caught a 26-yard pass as well.

University led 17-0 at the half.

Cameron 60, Bridgeport 6

CAMERON - Talen Brown carried 15 times for a career-high 260 yards and reached the end zone five times as the Dragons exploded for 32 points in the first quarter.

Weston Miller also picked up 111 yards and scored two TDs on six carries as Cameron ran 38 times for 418 yards and eight touchdowns. Griffen Miller also had a TD run.

Freshman Skylar Cooey blocked a punt and Sophomore Onyx O’Neil with a scoop and score.

Union Local 55, Cambridge 7

MORRISTOWN - The Jets (6-1) soared to a 35-0 lead after one quarter and led 55-0 at the half against the winless Bobcats (0-7).

Brody Perzanowski continued his march towards Quincy Wilson's all-time OVAC rushing mark with 170 yards and four touchdowns on a dozen carries. The senior is roughly 300 yards shy of the all-time mark. He scored on runs of 30, 25, 6 and 40.

Cambridge, which has now lost 37 straight games, was held to 118 yards of total offense.

Monroe Central 34, Shenandoah 0

WOODSFIELD -- The Seminoles dominated Friday against the Zeps to move to 4-3 on the season.

Monroe Central led 20-0 at halftime.

Cooper Howell completed three touchdown passes and ran for another score in the Seminoles victory. His scoring strikes were a 26-yarder to Max Demchak, a 14-yard pass to Bentley Lucas, and a 46-yarder to Demchak again.

Jett Kaiser also had a touchdown run, finishing as the team's leading rusher with 53 stripes.

Calhoun County 34, Madonna 6

WEIRTON -- The Blue Dons dropped a 34-6 decision to visiting Calhoun on homecoming night at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

The Dons (1-5) fell behind 14-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at halftime, but kept battling despite the deep hole and played the Red Devils (4-1) even in the second half.

The second half improvements culminated in a 32-yard Thomas Davidson score on a catch-and-run off a screen pass from Evan Kaczmarek that got Madonna on the board.

Kaczmarek, who took over at quarterback after Vinny Chiodi started, finished 11 of 24 for 117 yards and the score, but threw two picks. He had 101 of those yards in the second half.

Davidison had a 100-yard night with 42 yards on 11 carries and four catches for 61 yards.

Brooke 19, Ripley 13

WELLSBURG -- The best start for the Brooke football team in over a decade continued in thrilling fashion on Friday night.

With the game tied at 13-13 in the final minute, the Bruins’ Michael Gibson hauled in a pass from Kamden Sperringer and raced 29 yards for the game-winning touchdown as Brooke earned a hard-fought 19-13 victory over visiting Ripley on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field.

The victory improves the Bruins to 4-1 at the halfway mark of their season and is a key win for the Bruins in the Class AAA playoff race headed into the second half of the season.

After trailing 7-0 at halftime and falling behind 13-0 midway through the third quarter, the Bruins scored the last 19-unanswered points to rally for the win.

Sperringer ran for an 11-yard score late in the third quarter to get Brooke on the board and then rushed for a 1-yard score early in the fourth quarter to even the score before the late touchdown throw.

Sperringer finished the night 20 of 32 passing for 240 yards.

Gibson was the leading receiver for Brooke, hauling in six passes for 77 yards, while Crosby Morris had four catches for 59 yards.

Toronto 29, Tuslaw 28

MASSILLON -- The Toronto football team continued its undefeated start to the season in thrilling fashion Friday night.

The Red Knights converted a two-point conversion in overtime on the road at Tuslaw on Friday night to win, 29-28, and improve to 7-0 on the season.

Tuslaw led 7-6 after one quarter and 14-13 at halftime. Trailing 21-13 in the fourth quarter, the Knights scored and went for two, getting it to tie the game and set up the overtime finish.

The Red Knights are back on the road next Friday with a trip to Monroe Central.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Clairsville 7, Weir 1

WEIRTON - James Parsons found the net four times and Lucas Causey scored a goal and added a pair of assists as the Red Devils (10-6) roared past the host Red Riders (3-11-2) at Jimmy Carey Stadium. St. Clairsville won the OVAC Class 4A championship on the same artificial pitch last Saturday.

Trevor Tuttle and Xander Davis each scored goals, while Brycen Beck and Caden Blacker each added a pair of helpers. Cam Judge also had an assist.

St. Clairsville, which has won four straight, welcomes Harrison Central to Red Devil Stadium on Tuesday.
