Nate Davis Signs With Fishers Freight

By KIM NORTH 2 min read

Nate Davis has found a new home.

The Bellaire native recently signed with Fishers Freight of the Indoor Football League as a free agent. Davis was the starting quarterback for the San Diego Strike Force the last three summers.

Fishers Freight is located in Fishers, Ind., just outside of Indianapolis and about a 30-minute drive to Muncie where he was a standout at Ball State University.

"I'm very happy with my decision," Davis said. "I talked with my wife and we weighed our options. We took it (the offer) and ran."

No terms of the contract were disclosed, but all IFL contracts are 1-year deals.

A 16-year veteran of the indoor game in several different leagues, Davis has thrown for more than 38,000 yards and 800 touchdowns, making him one of the more attractive free agents this offseason.

"I talked with a couple of other IFL teams. I talked with the team in Wheeling (Miners). I talked to a team in Austin," Davis noted. "With the coaching staff Fishers has in place, I just felt this was my best opportunity. In just a few years they've become a solid franchise with a lot of community support."

Dixie Wooten is the head coach of the team.

Fishers Freight began at the start of the 2024 season and play in the state-of-the-art Fishers Event Center, which also houses the ECHL's Indy Fuel.

"It's championship or bust," Davis proclaimed. "I'm not going there to lose."

The move also allows the 6-2, 230-pounder to return to his college roots.

"Returning to Indiana does feel good," he allowed. "Two years ago I came back here to play with San Diego and we lost. It's only 30 minutes from Muncie. I've had a lot of people tell me they are going to come watch me play. That's exciting."

After an all-Ohio career at Bellaire, Davis headed to Ball State where he passed for 9,233 yards and 74 touchdowns in just three seasons before departing for the NFL Draft. The 39-year-old enjoyed his best season in 2008 when he led the Cardinals to a perfect 12-0 regular-season record and a national ranking as high as 12th. They finished 12-2 following losses to Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference championship game and Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl.

Davis was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
