Defibaugh, Beard, Williams captain T-L CC team

Another season of cross country has come and gone.

Miles were logged, times dropped and success was tasted.

Locally, the season saw several three individuals qualify for the OHSAA State Cross Country Meet and several others advance to the regional.

Today, The Times Leader Sports Staff announces its annual All Times Leader CC Team, which honors competitors from the T-L’s coverage area.

Bellaire’s Jacob Defibaugh, River’s Livi Beard and Buckeye Trail’s Kathryn Williams are the co-captains for the team, while Martins Ferry’s Chrissy Lewis is the coach of the year.

Here’s a capsule look at the honorees:

JACOB DEFIBAUGH, Bellaire — To say this junior standout had a big season wouldn’t be giving him enough credit.

Defibaugh blossomed into the area’s top male runner. That’s proven by the fact that he won seven races and finished the season as an all-Ohioan.

Defibaugh captured the Buckeye 8, OVCCL and OVAC Class 3A titles and earned all-OVAC overall, too. He was second in the district, 13th in the regional and finished 29th in the state last weekend. He also won the Belmont County and Meadowbrook invitationals.

“Jacob had the mindset of a true athlete and laid the foundation to become one of the top runners in the area and state,” Bellaire head coach Chris Arno said. “He is a student of the sport and is always asking what he needs to do to get better. He has big goals and dreams and the great thing is getting to watch them develop and come true.”

LIVI BEARD, River — This Pilots senior put the finishing touches on a brilliant prep career in impressive fashion this fall.

Beard qualified to the Division III state meet for the second straight season. She was the OVAC Class 1A/2A champion and finished second at the OVCCL and in the Eastern District. She turned in a 62nd place showing at the state meet, running a better time than she did in 2018.

“Livi has been the foundation for our team for the last four years,” River head coach Amy Shreve said. “She’s a quiet leader, who not only led by example, but she also knew when to have fun, as well as support each of her teammates. She pushed herself to achieve more than she did as a junior and she did that by shattering her own school record with a 19:06 at the OVCCL.

Her performances throughout the years will be remembered for a long time at River High School.”

KATHRYN WILLIAMS, Buckeye Trail — This talented sophomore picked up right where she left off as a freshman and improved.

After earning all-Ohio as a frosh, Williams finished as one of the state’s best again and earned a spot on the award’s podium, finishing 16th in the state. That finish followed up a district championship and fifth-place showing in the regional. At the OVAC, Williams crossed the line in ninth place overall, but that was best among runners in Class 3A.

“Kathryn had an excellent season and finish to her sophomore year,” Trail head coach Nathan Fisher said. “She cut 50 seconds off her time (at the state) from last year. She’s already got the mindset for next year’s goals. She’s definitely moving forward and her confidence is day and night for the better compared to this time last season.”

JASMINE ARNOLD, Harrison Central — This junior qualified for her third consecutive regional before sustaining an ankle injury, which affected her performance.

However, leading up to that point, Arnold was impressive. She claimed the Buckeye 8, OVAC 4A and OVCCL titles. She was 14th in the Division II district.

“Jasmine had a great season and was a great leader for us,” Harrison Central head coach Doug Drapp said.

“Despite the injury, she still finished strong at regionals.”

DESTINY ARNOLD, Harrison Central — This talented sophomore had another impressive campaign for the Huskies.

The younger Arnold qualified for the regional once again after finishing 29th in the district. She was an OVAC Class 4A placer and also a Buckeye 8 placer.

“Destiny is a great team leader who had a strong end to her season,” Drapp said.

KATRINA DAVIS, Bellaire — This senior standout put the finishing touches on an impressive careed in the Red and Black for Arno’s army.

Davis advanced to her third regional meet thanks to sixth-place showing. She was all-OVAC after placing fourth overall. She was also seventh in the OVCCL and sixth in the Buckeye 8, earning all league.

“Katrina is one of the most consistent runners we’ve had,” Arno explained.

“She’s a great student-athlete. We knew we could count on her and we knew exactly what we were going to get from her each meet.

“Her name is etched into the record books as being one of the top cross country runners in school history because of it.”

BETHANY MCELFRESH, Bellaire — This Big Reds freshman made a significant impact for Arno’s team this season.

McElfresh finished seventh overall in the district to earn her first trip to the regional meet. Prior to that, she finished fifth in OVAC Class 3A and eighth at the Buckeye 8, earning all league recognition.

“Bethany really came on strong at the end of the season when it matters most,” Arno said. “She ran a great race at the district, beating several people she hadn’t all season. She then ran a career-best time in the biggest meet of her life (the regional) in ugly weather conditions.”

JOSIE HANCOCK, Martins Ferry — This talented Riders freshman had a brilliant campaign for Coach Lewis’ squad.

Hancock was an all-OVAC runner and qualified as an individual to the regional meet. She also was all-Buckeye 8 and all-OVCCL.

“Josie is learning what her body can handle and trying to put it to its limits,” Lewis said. “She is very focused on her goals.”

CHLOE HILL, Martins Ferry — This Riders senior was one of the team leaders for Lewis’ relatively youthful bunch.

Hill was an all-OVAC runner and punched a ticket to the regional. She was also all-Buckeye 8 and all-OVCCL.

“Chloe had a terrific senior season,” Lewis said. “She put a lot of effort into it, and I am very sad to see her go.”

MAGGIE MARODY, St. Clairsville — This junior had an impressive season for Coach Tony Ciroli’s team.

Marody was an individual regional qualifier and finished ninth in the Buckeye 8, earning all-league accolades. She was 18th in the district and placed in OVAC Class 4A.

“Maggie has the level of commitment that is needed to do what she has to do for both the benefit of herself as well as the team,” St. C. head coach Tony Ciroli said. “We will definitely m

ALLYSON EVONEK, St. Clairsville — This Red Devils standout was the girls leader in most of the meets for her team.

Evonek was an all-OVAC performer thanks to finishing 17th overall. She was also all-Buckeye 8 after crossing as runnerup. She was 12th in the district, earning a trip to the regional meet once again.

“Allyson has trhe courage needed to push herself beyond what her mind tells her that her body can do,” Ciroli said. “We are excited to have Allyson and Maggie back again next year.”

ERIC LEECH, Harrison Central — This senior had another big season for the Huskies and Coach Drapp.

The team’s leader for most of the season, Leech qualified once again to the regional meet thanks to a 29th place effort in the district.

Prior to the postseason, he was fourth in the Buckeye 8 and seventh overall in the OVAC. He was the Class 4A champion. He was also second at the OVCCL.

“Eric was a great team leader for us,” Drapp said. “He was our top finisher most of the season, and we’ll definitely miss him.”

LOGAN LANEY, Harrison Central — This Huskies standout put forth another solid season that ended with a strong run at the regional.

Laney was an all-OVAC performer after his 19th place finish. He was 11th at the district to lead the Huskies and second in the Buckeye 8.

“Logan is very dedicated and finished first for us in the last couple of meets,” Drapp said. “He finished ahead of all local runners at the regional.”

FRANCIS TOOHEY, Martins Ferry — This sophomore had a “break-through season” according to his head coach.

Toohey was an all-Buckeye 8 and all-OVCCL performer. He also qualified for the regional meet.

“Francis loves to race and really competes when he’s on the course,” Lewis said.

WYATT WODARCZYK, Martins Ferry — This Purple Riders junior had an outstanding season for Lewis and company.

Wodarczyk was the Purple Riders leader at the OVAC, finishing 27th overall. He was fifth at the Buckeye 8 and qualified as an individual to the regional meet.

“Wyatt is a unique kid, who works extra hard and brings a fun dynamic to the team,” Lewis said.

ELIJAH SMITH, Martins Ferry — This Purple Riders standout was the Ferry leader for several meets.

Smith was an all-OVAC performer thanks to his 20th place finish overall. He was also an all-OVCCL and Buckeye 8 runner. He also qualified for the regional as an individual.

“Eli loves the sport and it shows in his attitude toward training,” Lewis said. “He is very committed to his team.”

TYLER JENKINS, Barnesville — This Shamrocks sophomore standout developed into one of the area’s premier runners this season.

Jenkins finished second in OVAC Class 3A, fifth at the OVCCL and earned a regional berth by virtue of his 10th place finish. He was also third in the Belmont County meet.

“Tyler comes from a running family and has been around the sport for most of his life,” Shamrocks head coach Mark Brown said. “He’s finally maturing and getting stronger physically, and I expect him to keep improving.”

SHAWN COE, Union Local — This Jets’ junior had a break-out season for rookie head coach Lindy Stauffer’s team.

Coe finished fifth in OVAC Class 3A and eighth at the OVCCL and qualified for the regional meet in Division II.

“Shawn had an incredible season,” Stauffer said. “He went into it with two goals, running sub 18 minutes and qualifying for the regional championship.

With hard work and determination, he met both of those goals. He ran a 17:11, which is a personal record and I am very proud of how well he did this season and look forward to seeing what his senior season will bring.”

CHRISSY LEWIS, Martins Ferry — The veteran Purple Rider head coach led her team another highly successful campaign.

Both her boys and girls claimed titles at the Martins Ferry Invitational, Belmont County, OVCCL, Buckeye 8 and OVAC. Both were also regional qualifiers.

“It was another great season for us,” Lewis said. “I am very proud of the kids and how hard they worked.”
