Fort Frye blanks Barnesville in D-VI regional semi

Cadets move on with 34-0 triumph over Shamrocks

Barnesville's Gage Hannahs (7) tries to elude Fort Frye's Braden Medley during Saturday night's Division VI, Region 23 semifinal playoff encounter in Beverly.

BEVERLY — Barnesville was its own worst enemy Saturday night in a Division VI, Region 23 semifinal against Fort Frye. The Shamrocks continually shot themselves in the foot when they seemed to be moving the football.

The end result: a 34-0 blanking at the hands of top-seeded Fort Frye.

“Our offense is definitely not as effective when we get down by a couple of scores, and that’s what happened,” Barnesville (6-3) head coach Blake Allen said. “That also happened against River and it makes us one dimensional.

“We had opportunities early on a couple of drives but we just couldn’t punch it in,” he added. “I thought if we kept it to a one score game at the half, we’d be in good shape. But we didn’t get it done. We had too many penalties.”

The Shamrocks had a pair of turnovers, turned the ball over on downs once and punted twice on their five first-half possessions. They did reach the Cadets (9-0) 14-yard line but an interception on fourth-and-4 thwarted that drive.

Fort Frye, like good teams do, capitalized on the first turnover and after it stopped Barnesville short on a fourth-and-6.

After Braden Medley recovered a Shamrocks fumble on their fourth play of the opening drive, quarterback Ian Ellis speared Nic Hart on an 11-yard scoring toss and Zaiden Huck split the uprights for 7-0 reading.

Barnesville ran a dozen plays on its second possession, but a fourth-and-6 pass completion was two yards shy of the first-down marker at the Fort Frye 30.

On the Cadets second play, Maeson Long scooted around right end and raced 65 yards down the sidelines. The PAT kick was blocked as the margin grew to 13-0.

Jadyn Lucas pounced on a Fort Frye fumble at the 8:23 mark of the second quarter to set the visitors up at their own 34. They used 11 plays in reaching the hosts’ 14, but an incomplete pass on third-and-4 preceded an interception by Owen Brown.

Fort Frye added to its lead on the first drive of the third quarter. Collin Welsh burst up the middle from 26 yards out on third-and-4 to make it 19-0. Long ran for the two points and a 21-0 advantage.

Damian Huck seemed to set the Cadets up with good field position when he recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but Barnesville’s Ayden Hannahs stepped in front of an Ellis aerial on the next play.

The Shamrocks tried some trickery on fourth-and-3 from their own 43 but a reverse pass was dropped.

It only took Fort Frye four plays to make it 28-0 as Long sped 20 yards around right end and Zaiden Huck added the placement.

Long concluded his night with a 25-yard TD scamper that bumped the margin to the final. He finished with 150 stripes on 11 carries. Welsh added 81 on 10 totes as the hosts piled up 308 on 37 tries. Ellis completed six passes for 99 yards, a TD and two INTs, both by Ayden Hannahs.

Gage Hannahs caught nine passes for 87 yards and also rushed 14 times for 42. Ayden Hannahs was 18 of 34 for 173 yards and a trio of picks.
