BEALLSVILLE – In a tight-knit community, like Beallsville, often the athletic programs are more like a family than just a team.

The family theme takes an even larger step this season as Terry Jarrett takes over the reins of the Blue Devils boys team from his brother Rick, who retired from coaching after last season. Jarrett is no stranger to the hardwood though, walking the sidelines for 12 years as the head coach for the Blue Devils girls program.

“I wanted to get back into it. I’m getting to the years where I am close to retirement, but I wanted to see how things went and kind of see where things went from there,” Jarret stated of returning to the sidelines.

The team has 11 players out this season after losing seven to graduation last year. Those departed players are: Spencer Jarrett, Dakota Phillips, Wyatt Brown, Kollin Ludwig, James Schnegg, Jacob Nalley and Matt Bertrand.

Last season’s team finished with a 7-16 record.

With 11 players, Jarrett is still weighing his options for his rotation, however, the coronavirus situation hasn’t done him any favors.

“It’s been tough getting everyone there right now and that’s the bad thing,” Jarrett noted. “We were remote for a couple of weeks before basketball started. We have a young team and it’s going to show for a while until we can get some leadership from some of the ones who played last year. With the numbers, it’s tough when you even have just one or more out.”

Adam Baker is one of those players Jarrett is counting on to lead. The senior is a returning starter after recording quality minutes last season.

“Adam played a lot last year and started. He will be a senior and is one of the main players we have back with most of the experience,” Jarrett surmised.

Toby Otto (6-4) is a fellow senior, who saw limited time last season. Kyon Falkenstein (6-5) is the final senior on the roster, and although he transferred from the Cleveland area, he has family ties to Beallsville.

Brandon Loudon (6-3) leads the junior class after playing last season and he is joined by classmates Deyton Hughes and Tae English, who did not play last season and is back out this year.

With no sophomores out, a quintet of freshmen rounds out the lineup.

Tryson English is someone that Jarrett says “Handles the ball well and may need to be acclimated quick.” Garrett Perkins (6-1), was the quarterback on the football team and will show athleticism on the hardwood.

Chandler Osborne, Reed Smith and Ethyn Baker (6-0) finalize the roster.

“We want to see daily improvement, that’s what we are hoping for,” Jarrett stated.

The Blue Devils will attempt to court a JV team for at least a couple quarters a night, however, Jarrett knows with the numbers out that will be tough. Jeremy Joy will be Jarrett’s assistant coach.
