MOUNDSVILLE — A hotly contested race for seats on Moundsville’s city council ended with incumbent David Haynes retaining his seat and Judy Hunt and former Councilman Phil Remke joining the fold.

Hunt replaces Paul “Dude” Haynes, who is David Haynes’ brother, in the 1st Ward, while Remke will take Simms’ at-large seat.

Unofficial results Tuesday night showed Hunt with 303 votes, challenger Larry Vucelick with 236 and Paul Haynes with 151.

Hunt could not be reached for comment, but had earlier stated that she hoped to bring her business acumen to council. Hunt has many years of experience as a clerk with the cities of Moundsville, Cameron and currently Benwood, where she also serves as treasurer and municipal court judge.

Taking an at-large seat by a comfortable margin was Remke, who had previously served as an at-large councilman before being narrowly defeated by Allen Hendershot in 2014, garnering 1,294 votes. He could not be reached for comment.

David Haynes kept his seat with a final total of 917 votes over newcomers Carl Boso, who had 908 votes, and Simms, who had 901. Also running was Nick James, who received 802 votes.

Haynes, who had been a vocal opponent of the city’s ongoing debate on repairs to the Four Seasons Pool, said he hopes to use his extended time on council to continue working with his fellow council members

“I’m tickled, I’m very well pleased,” Haynes said of his victory. “I just want to work with council. When I take on the job of council at-large, I represent all the citizens. … I try to work with all of (the council), and I think I do a good job. I’m pleased I got back on.”

Haynes hoped to continue exploring other options to repairing the pool, which he called “an awful big expense.” The pool needs an estimated $800,000 in repairs.
