Wheeling Hospital earns high marks

WHEELING — Wheeling Hospital continued this year to earn national and regional recognition for its various health care services, primarily in cancer care, as well as in the treatment of heart attack and chest pain.

The hospital’s Schiffler Cancer Center was ranked among the top 10 percent among all U.S. cancer centers for patient safety and medical excellence. The ranking, the highest possible from CareChex, a division of Comparion, equals that of any cancer center in Columbus or Pittsburgh. No other hospital in the region earned the ranking.

CareChex also ranked Wheeling Hospital and its Cardiac Catheterization Lab as the best in West Virginia for the treatment of heart attack. The lab also earned was named an Accredited Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (angioplasty/stents) and Resuscitation, as well as a Certified Chest Pain Center.

CareChex also issued the top ranking in the Wheeling market for patient safety and medical excellence at/for to the Sharon and Richard Dlesk Emergency/Trauma Center. CareChex rated these services as top in the Wheeling market for patient safety: overall hospital care; general surgery; gastrointestinal hemorrhage; heart failure treatment; neurological care; major neurosurgery; pneumonia care; spinal surgery and women’s health.

The rating service also named the following services as the top in the Wheeling market for medical excellence in: cancer care; cardiac care; heart attack treatment; hip fracture; and women’s health.
