OHIO VALLEY BASEBALL LEAGUE

The Ohio Valley Baseball League is an adult wooden bat baseball league that begins play in May and carries on throughout the summer in both Ohio and West Virginia. The eight teams comprising the OVBL include: Barton, Maynard, Shadyside and BELMONT COUNTY Cubs in Ohio and the Wheeling Tigers, Wheeling Cardinals, Weirton and Marshall County in West Virginia

RUDY MUMLEY OVAC ALL-STAR CHARITY FOOTBALL CLASSIC

This year’s annual David vs. Goliath battle between high school football allstars from Ohio and West Virginia will take place July 22. The game is the official kickoff of the high school football season in the Ohio Valley. Dave Bruney Football Complex in Martins Ferry plays host to this year’s football extravaganza that comes complete with the McDonald’s OVAC All-Star band, Queen of Queens pageant, OVAC All-Star Cheerleaders and many more features and activities.

EDGAR MARTIN BEAST OF THE EAST CLASSIC

Established in 1989, the Edgar Martin Beast of the East Classic is the annual aluminum bat baseball tournament with three age groups pitting some of the best players and teams from the eastern half of the United States against one another during a four-day stretch in early July. WHEELING NAILERS

The Wheeling Nailers are the Class AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing hockey in the ECHL.

WHEELING AREA HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Like its warmer weather counterpart, the Wheeling Area Hockey Association is the driving force in youth hockey in the Ohio Valley. Boys and girls ages 4 through high school can compete on teams, both in recreational divisions and on travel teams.

WHEELING AREA SOCCER ASSOCIATION

WASA is the main soccer organization in the Ohio Valley, hosting leagues for kids as young as 4 all the way up through high school age in both the fall and spring. WASA utilizes both recreational leagues and also fields a travel team, the FC Wheeling United. It started in 1980.

SUPER SIX FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Since the 1994 season, the Super Six Football Championships, the state title games for Class A, AA and AAA of West Virginia high school football have been played at Wheeling Island Stadium. While the OVAC All-Star Game is the official kickoff, the Super Six puts the cap on the high school football season locally by allowing fans to catch state-title games in their own backyard.
