The deadline to obtain Real ID driver’s licenses pushed to 2023

MARTINS FERRY — Those who decided to go ahead with getting their Real ID driver’s license won’t actually need it until May 2023.

That’s because the deadline to obtain the extra identification, which will be needed by people to fly domestically in the United States, was extended — again.

Starting on May 3, 2023, people who want to fly from state to state will be required to show the new “Real ID” driver’s license, aka Compliant Card, or another federally-approved form of identification such as a passport.

The new Real ID driver’s license can be obtained when one renews their driver’s license.

One must show extra documents proving their identity, date of birth, legal presence in the country, Social Security number and one’s street address.

The idea for the enhanced driver’s license was a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission. The original deadline to get the ID was October 2020. It was postponed by then-President Trump to October 2021, and then postponed again by President Biden until 2023.

Though it is not required, the Real ID-compliant driver’s license will also be necessary to gain entry into federal buildings including military bases, according to the Ohio BMV.

A non-enhanced driver’s license states “not for federal ID” in the corner.

This means the license cannot be used to board an airplane legally; additional documentation such as a passport will be needed.

Those flying outside the U.S. still must also have a passport.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission.

“Minor children under the age of 18, who are flying with their parents, do not need a Compliant Card. Unaccompanied minors who wish to fly commercially will need a Compliant Card or a Standard Card with other federally-approved documentation,” according to Ohio BMV.
