ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Belmont County law enforcement assisted the U.S. Marshals Service with the arrest of a wanted man Thursday.

Tyler Pesta, 26, of Steubenville was then lodged at the Belmont County Jail, awaiting transfer to Jefferson County.

“Whenever they come down to pick him up,” Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas said.

Cruisers from multiple agencies were observed traveling on Interstates 70 and 470 with lights and sirens activated, seeming to converge on St. Clairsville late Thursday afternoon. The vehicles were parked along Ohio 9/Marietta Street later, with officers waving traffic through.

Police Chief Matt Arbenz was spotted at the scene, as were other officers in tactical gear and armed with rifles. As they departed, one Belmont County sheriff’s deputy said they were executing a warrant.

“There’s a warrant out of Jefferson County, the city of Steubenville, for felonious assault,” Lucas said. “The U.S. Marshal contacted my (Criminal Interdiction Unit about Pesta) possibly being in St. Clairsville. Working with the St. Clairsville PD, was able to confirm that he was at this residence, so we activated my Special Operations branch team and was able to arrest him and secure him without incident.”

Lucas said no one else at the home was arrested.

According to published reports, Pesta was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred in mid-June at 128 Shirley Circle, Steubenville. Landon McShane, 18, was treated for a gunshot wound.

Lucas declined to comment about whether any weapons were recovered at the residence.

“This case is the city of Steubenville, so anything in regards to the case, as regards to charges, will have to come from them,” Lucas said, explaining that the Special Operations branch includes deputies and officers from different agencies. “St. Clairsville was involved, Barnesville. … We’re a multi-jurisdictional team. … We give credit. It’s a joint effort of all the teams and the U.S. Marshal.”

Dispatchers at the Steubenville Police Department said no one was available to comment on the arrest Thursday evening.
