Flushing antiques shop has new owner, new name

Sunni Rae’s celebrates grand opening

FLUSHING — An antiques and collectibles store in the village may have a new owner, but she knows the business by heart.

Sunni Rae Scott is the owner of Sunni Rae’s, a shop that has she managed for the past five years under a different name — Hornswogglers.

Scott said she took over the business after splitting from her former affiliate, Hornswogglers of Bellaire. Her store will continue to offer the same types of items Flushing area residents have come to know and love.

“We offer everything from furniture to tools, antiques and collectibles, appliances. We also have an indoor flea market with 25 vendors,” she said.

The 12,000-square-foot shop, located at 450 High St., Flushing, also includes items picked by Scott and consignment items. She also sells items via eBay.

“I try to be a specialist in caring for the customer. Customers who do certain collectibles, I keep their names on hand and if I get something they collect in I can give them a call,” she said. “I don’t mind working with other shops in the area. … We all share the same customers in this area.”

Scott said she has learned over the years what types of used goods and collectibles sell well in Flushing. For example, primitives-style items such as old washboards sell out quickly in her home village of Bellaire. But in Flushing, a country setting, most everyone already has one in their basement.

Many of her customers buy items to use, not just to collect. A woman might buy a used ringer washer so she can wash her coal-mining husband’s clothes in the basement, Scott said.

Scott said she does not mind commuting from Bellaire to Flushing to run her business. She said when she first started managing the Flushing shop, people in the village treated her like family.

Scott is planning to expand her outdoor market in May by offering more vendors selling produce and locally produced goods such as Gran’s Goodies. She also plans to have a food vendor on site. The outdoor market is scheduled to take place from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Sunni Rae’s store hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays; and closed Mondays. Her number is 740-968-7212. She also has a Facebook page. The store recently held a grand opening week celebration.
