Tick season is upon us

If the thought of creepy crawlies sends shivers down your spine, fair warning: Tick season is upon us. According to a report by Ohio’s Country Journal, experts are seeing a shift in the number and species of ticks here; and many bring health concerns with them. “We’re seeing changes in the distribution of a lot of medically important tick species,” Risa Pesapane, an associate professor in ecosystem and wildlife health at Ohio State University told the Country Journal. “We have had new ticks arriving in the state of Ohio and becoming established here.” Sure, there’s ...

Fantasy is fun at Disney, but it’s not for leaders

Lynnda and I are married 50 years this month. We decided to do a second honeymoon this month at our Happy Place, Walt Disney World. Just us. No children or grandchildren on this trip. We have a special dinner planned for the California Grill atop the Contemporary Resort Hotel. Disney is a place for us to relax, play and use our imaginations. My favorite attraction is the Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In the attraction, you are a recruit for the resistance on a transport to a secret base. For me it’s fun to pretend this is real. Your ...

Walking around Belmont for the health of it

With the arrival of spring and the tasks it brings, I noticed that I felt a bit more out of shape this year than I did last spring, so I decided to do something about it. Along with watching what I eat more closely, drinking healthier beverages and skipping the sodas, I decided that I wanted to take a walk every day that I could. I didn’t embark on a fancy fitness campaign. Instead, I just stepped out the front door and headed up the street. It seemed like a simple approach to get myself started, so I just set out to walk a large loop around Belmont. There are a few residents ...

Leave wildlife alone

It’s late spring in Eastern Ohio, and the region’s non-human residents seem to be thriving. It seems that everywhere you look, you can see examples of the wildlife that help make this region a beautiful place to live. Over the past week or so, people living in and visiting St. Clairsville have reported seeing a black bear passing through the area. Such sightings are relatively rare, but they do occur in Belmont County nearly every year. In fact, Belmont County Sheriff’s Office Dangerous Wild Animal Response Team Commander Sgt. Thomas DeVaul said several bears inhabit the southern ...

Reply to DEI description letter

Dear Editor, A reply to Bill Bryant’s Letter to the Editor in The Times Leader supporting DEI (AKA Critical Race Theory, Cultural Marxism). He describes DEI as: “It’s a framework and set of principles that many organizations and institutions are adopting to promote fair treatment and full participation of all people, especially those who have historically been underrepresented or discriminated against in the grip of oppression.” Rather than express my personal opinion on this I’m going to call an expert witness to counter his “argument.” I call Dr. Carol Swain to ...

TDS

Dear Editor, It is truly amazing the number of people suffering from TDS, including a couple of the letter writers here! One continues to refer to President Trump’s approval rating. These are the same polls that said Trump WOULD NEVER win the election, but as we know he did with historic numbers, so it would be idiotic to have any faith in these rigged polls. By the way, these TDS sufferers have never explained how Biden could receive 81.3 million votes, but Harris only received 74.3 million when Trumps numbers only went up 2.6 million votes? Are you saying 4.4 million TRUMP ...
