Household hazardous waste collection set

ST. CLAIRSVILLE –Residents of Belmont and Jefferson counties who need to get rid of old paint, pool chemicals, motor oil or other hazardous waste can do so during a collection set for Oct. 23.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection is set from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at Ohio University Eastern Campus, 45425 National Road, West, St. Clairsville.

The event is sponsored by the JB Green Team.

Residents will be asked to show proof of residency. Participants can stay in their vehicle, and staff will remove and separate items and place materials in the correct containers.

Items that will be accepted include: household cleaners, lab packs (acids/bases), lawn and garden chemicals,

pool chemicals, aerosols, roof and driveway sealers, light bulbs with mercury, lead acid and dry cell batteries, automotive fluids (motor oil and anti-freeze), gasoline and kerosene, paint and paint-related products (solvents, strippers, turpentine and varnishes), propane cylinders (grill size or smaller), mercury, organic acids, fire extinguishers and pesticides, herbicides and insecticides.

Items not accepted include: no commercial or business waste, no PCBs, transformers or capacitors, no compressed gases (other than propane), no explosives or ammunition, no smoke detectors, no medical/infectious waste, no DEA controlled substances, no radioactive waste, no appliances, TVs, computers, tires, general recycling or trash will be taken.
