BCARL hits milestone in control of animal population

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County Animal Rescue League has been quietly making a powerful impact behind the scenes — improving animal welfare, supporting pet owners and controlling the pet population across Belmont County.

Through its ambitious “BCARL Blitz” initiative, the organization earmarked $100,000 earlier this year to provide free spay and neuter services for cats. Now, thanks to a collaborative effort with Compassionate Care Center and Barnesville Veterinary, nearly 800 cats have been altered, and those dedicated funds have been used to directly serve the community.

“Our goal was simple: reduce the number of unwanted litters and support pet owners in need,” said MaryEllen Gust, president of the BCARL Board of Directors. “We’re thrilled to have reached this milestone – but we know the work doesn’t stop here.”

In addition to the BCARL Blitz, the organization is also making an impact through its Spay Neuter Assistance Program. SNAP currently helps Belmont County residents spay or neuter their dogs for just $20, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

This program, made possible in partnership with Barnesville Veterinary, ensures that financial hardship doesn’t become a barrier to responsible pet ownership.

BCARL has also extended its outreach efforts into the community by regularly donating pet food to local food pantries in St. Clairsville and Barnesville. The organization is now looking to expand this support to additional pantries in Colerain, Martins Ferry and Shadyside.

While BCARL no longer has a brick-and-mortar facility, its commitment to Belmont County animals and their owners remains as strong as ever.
