BRIDGEPORT — Anthony Eden was introduced as the new maintenance/transportation/custodial supervisor in the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District during Wednesday’s board of education meeting.

A Bellaire resident, Eden comes to the district after working the past three years in the maintenance department at the former Belmont Community Hospital.

Eden takes over for Tim Criswell who will retire at the end of the current school year.

“There’s going to be some big shoes to fill as Tim has been here for 37 years. Obviously, he knows his job very well,” Eden said. “It’s going to be a welcome challenge, though. I think there are some things that we can do to help the district.”

Eden said he has a carpentry and strong maintenance background.

His assistant will be Todd Antill who worked at the Mayflower Plant in Shadyside until it closed its doors. He then worked in a coal mine before this opportunity arose.

According to district Treasurer Dana Garrison, Eden’s annual salary is $52,000, while Antill’s is $44,000.

In other news, Ty Schambach was honored for earning a superior rating at the OMEA District 9 Solo and Ensemble competition held at Marietta College. He was awarded a medal and offered a scholarship of $1,600 per year for their music department for his solo performance of “Danny Boy.”

Schambach was invited to perform at the college’s Honor High School Recital.

The board also voted unanimously to have Kalkreuth Roofing repair leaks in the school’s roof.

“We had the roof inspected and it was found that we have several leaks that are centered around the perimeter of the gymnasium,” Superintendent Zac Shutler said. “There is some brick work that needs done. It is allowing water to seep through. Also there is some general repair such as caulking and holes that need repaired and replaced.

“However, the inspection did allow us to find out that the roof, which is the original, is in good shape.”

He said Kalkreuth’s bid was the lowest at about $50,000.

“It might cost a little more because there is some insulation that needs removed from the area of the leaking. We feel that we need to move forward with the repairs, and if we get reimbursed on the parts, that would be fantastic. We want to extend the life of the roof for as long as possible and the best way to do that is to get it repaired as quickly as we can,” he said.

The board also unanimously approved the following matters:

∫ contracts for certified employees: Sarah Zonders, Patricia Tustin, Holly Tester, Fred Ray, Caroline McCabe and Deborah Glynn (1-year); Zachary Winland, Jennifer Fillipovich, Mindy Sears and Christine Bonnett (2-year); Melissa Hill, Kimberly Harris, Kathryn Sheets, Kelli Hilt and Jordan Robinson (3-year); and Maria Kayafas, David Nelson, Felicia Porter, Ronald Gill and Chante Adams (5-year);

∫ contracts for classified employees: Jim Hood, John Anderson, Sandy Fogle and Andrea Bishop (1-year); Cain McCormick, Ashley Namack and Emily Hall (2-year); and David Henry and Misty Jeffers (continuing);

∫ Gena Spurlock as school nurse for 1-year;

∫ Brandi Kidwell as assistant varsity track coach, retroactive to March 1;

∫ continued membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association;

∫ posting of the 2019 Summer School Camp;

∫ the hiring of Donald Cash III as Elementary Intervention Specialist;

∫ the transfer of Maclaine Murad to Kindergarten teacher and a 1-year contract;

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in the Central Office.
