Monroe County Christmas Fest set

WOODSFIELD — The community will have plenty to do next weekend, as activities are scheduled to take place throughout the day during the annual Monroe County Christmas Festival set for Dec. 4 in Woodsfield.

Ruth Workman, office manager of the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce, said she started the event in 2007 as a way to help the community celebrate the holidays.Organizers were unable to hold the event last year due to COVID-19, but they are looking forward to revamping the tradition this year.

The day begins with a breakfast with Santa from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Brown Community Center. Kids and their families will be offered pancakes, sausage and a drink.

“Santa will be there, and kids will be able to do crafts,” she said.

Other activities will take place during the day, including the United Methodist Church bake sale, a visit with Mrs. Claus at the United Presbyterian Church and a cookie tray sale at the Woodsfield Nazarene Church, all from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Christmas Market at Modern Home and Hardware, a craft show with around 20 vendors, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Crafters, music and pictures with Santa will be available during that time.

The Kiwanis Club Christmas Ornament Walk fundraiser will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone who purchases a certificate to participate in the fundraiser will walk around town collecting 14 ornaments from different businesses in the area.

“It helps promote businesses and gets people inside the businesses. It’s a fun thing for people to do with their kids,” Workman added.

Residents and businesses are invited to participate in the decoration of the 100 trees at the city park. Those interested in participating are asked to contact Kayla Ruble via Facebook to sign up.

“You can decorate a tree in someone’s memory, or for your organization. … You can decorate it any time that day and they’ll light the trees at dusk,” she said.

Also at the park will be games, crafts and carriage rides presented by the local Future Farmers of America.

Line-up for the Christmas parade will start at 5 p.m. on North Paul Street. The Monroe Central and River High School bands will perform at 5 p.m. in front of the Monroe County Courthouse. The lighting of the Christmas tree outside the courthouse will begin at 5:45 p..m., with the parade slated to start at 6 p.m. along Main Street. United Way will serve cookies, hot dogs and hot chocolate while the parade is making its way through town.

Following the parade, the Monroe Theatre will feature the movie, “Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure.”
