Flying Spoon wins Show of Hands competition
WHEELING — A business offering yoga classes complemented by juice and health food options was victorious at Wheeling’s “Show of Hands” competition Wednesday night.
Kim Aston and Donn McCombs, owners of Flying Spoon — located at 33rd and Jacob streets in South Wheeling — took home a check for over $5,631 as winners of the business presentation event.
Flying Spoon combines food, fitness, and social activities in Wheeling while offering a lunch menu, fresh juices, yoga classes, and community events.
The owners explained the money won Wednesday night will be put toward buying a new juicer and second new blender to help with providing beverages to patrons.
McCombs and Astin also want to finish out a back room for use as a gathering place after the weather turns colder and outdoor areas can’t be used.
“Thank you, thank you so much,” Astin said. “We honestly came in with high hopes of winning. We’re thrilled. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s unreal. We truly appreciate the support of the community.”
Flying Spoon has been in business for just over one year, having opened in August of 2023.
“We’re very new to the area, and very excited to grow,” she added.
Astin explained how the back room will be finished out for use.
“We want it to be like a lounge,” she said. “We have a little book share. If somebody works from home, and they want to escape home, we would like them to have a place to come,” she said.
“Show of Hands” is organized by Wheeling Heritage, with the Orrick law firm being a major sponsor. Four businesses are selected to compete by offering an idea for an upgrade to their establishment, or their proposal for a new business.
The Show of Hands event on Wednesday was the third and final of 2024, marking the end of the program’s 10-year anniversary.
Over the past decade, winners have taken home a combined $143,864 in winnings, reported Riley Carpenter, the new director of programming for Wheeling Heritage.
Past “Show of Hands” events have guaranteed the winner at least $4,000 based upon the sponsorship support of Orrick and others in the community. Those attending are asked to contribute $5 at the door. In return, they receive dinner and a ballot upon which to vote for their favorite presenter of the evening.
The winner takes home all money from sponsors, as well as that contributed at the door.
