Head coaches, volunteers ready to train athletes at Barnesville schools

BARNESVILLE — Barnesville Exempted Village School District is welcoming new volunteers for its sports programs, and the board of education approved the hiring of head coaches and leading positions.

During Barnesville’s Feb. 20 board of education meeting, Barnesville schools invited new volunteers to support the sports programs for the 2024-25 school year and the 2025-26 school year. Board members Janice Miliken, Dennis Huntsman, Tammy Wells, Ed Eberhart and Leslie Shultz approved 11 volunteers for the sports programs for this school year. Chad Winland will take on the role of volunteer for junior high softball, middle school Principal Casey Mayo for junior high baseball, Chris Hannahs as baseball assistant, Brady Treherne as baseball assistant, Samantha Huff as softball assistant, Corey Powell as softball assistant, Dalton Turner as track assistant and Mariah Shumaker as track assistant.

New volunteers for the 2025-26 school year include Steven Shumaker as football assistant, Neal Zaccagnini as football assistant as well and Amanda Sobutka as cheer assistant.

Not only are the sports programs getting new volunteers, but BOE members approved one-year contracts for leading positions for teams for the 2025-26 school year. Abby McClelland will serve as the head cheerleading coach, Blake Allen as the head football coach, Brady Treherne as football assistant, Anthony Star as football assistant, Chris Hannahs as football assistant, Bryce Allen as football defensive coordinator, Dylan Rogers as football offensive coordinator, Mark Brown as head cross country coach, Melissa Dodd as assistant cross country coach, Jerry Robinson as head golf coach, Kimberly Jarrett as head volleyball coach and Karie Hunkler as assistant volleyball coach.

The BOE received three donations for the month of January, including $300 from Barnesville Pumpkin Festival to the Future Farmers of America, $5,000 from the Barnesville Boosters Club to Barnesville athletics and $350 from WesBanco Bank Inc. to band and music.

The board also received pledges for the turf and stadium lighting project, which is money for the new lights that were installed at the Barnesville Football Stadium a couple years ago. Muxie Distributing donated $1,000, Ed and Heather Eberhart donated $400 and Barnesville Rotary Club donated $2,000.

BOE members approved of a five-year $5,000 contract between Barnesville Exempted Village School District, the Barnesville Golf Parents and Belmont Hills Country Club.

Another contract the school will enter into after Miliken, Huntsman, Wells, Eberhart and Shultz approved of it is an enclosed contract between Barnesville schools and the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center at the rate of $53.20 per hour, to be utilized on an “as-needed” basis, for payroll services.

Substitutes will also make their way into Barnesville schools for the rest of the 2024-25 school year as BOE members approved Melissa Myers and Kayla Milburn for the year.

BOE members awarded the elementary school second grade position to Angie Fisher for the 2025-26 school year.

The board adopted Resolution 25-10 at the meeting, which authorizes 2025-26 membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Both middle and high school students will take on the VEX Robotics State Competition, traveling to the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton. The middle school’s trip will be March 13 and 14, while the high school’s will be March 15 and 16.

The meeting ended with Superintendent Micah Fuchs recommending the board to complete the annual review of the enclosed policy, Parent Participation in Title I programs.
