CAMBRIDGE — The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office is alerting parents, schools, and community members following a recent spike in the number of THC-infused products being found in the possession of local teenagers.
Over the past several weeks, deputies — including school resource officers (SROs) — have recovered numerous THC-containing items. The items include vape pens, cannabis edibles made to look like candy or snacks, and high-potency THC oils. Many of these products are disguised in packaging that intentionally mimics name-brand treats in an effort to appeal to minors.
“We are seeing a disturbing trend of high-potency THC items being accessed and used by youth in our county,” said Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden. “These are not just harmless vape pens or candy — they are illegal, dangerous substances that can have serious health and legal consequences for minors.”
Health professionals warn that adolescent use of high-THC products can negatively affect brain development, academic performance, and mental health. Some of the seized items have tested at THC levels far exceeding those found in regulated adult-use cannabis products, raising concerns about overdoses, being laced with other drugs and unknown contaminants.
Possession of THC products by minors is illegal under Ohio law and may result in juvenile charges, school discipline, or court-ordered diversion programs. In cases involving distribution to other minors, additional charges may apply.
Sheriff Paden urges parents and guardians to talk openly with their children about the risks of using THC products and to monitor for signs of use, including unusual packaging, changes in behavior, or the presence of vape devices.
Anyone with information about individuals selling or distributing THC products to minors is encouraged to contact the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office at 740-439-4455 or submit an anonymous tip through the office’s website at www.guernseysheriff.com.
