Human remains found in South Wheeling
WHEELING — Wheeling Police converged on an area in South Wheeling after human remains were found on the site.
Wheeling Police Maj. Josh Sanders, commander of the department’s investigations bureau, said that 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, police were called to the corner of 42nd and Wood streets. Someone who was walking in the area had called WPD to say they had found a skull.
The officers who responded determined it was a human skill and began investigating the rest of the area. Sanders said more bones were found that police believe are connected to the skull, Sanders said the department did not want to comment further on that discovery.
The investigations bureau was on the scene Wednesday afternoon, as was the medical examiner. Sanders said the WPD also called in the local coroner as well as cadaver dogs to assist in the search.
Officers also flew a drone over the area to gain a different perspective of the scene and help with crime scene documentation.
