WHEELING – Next month, social advocates across the nation will increase their efforts and call out “no more” to sexual assault and domestic violence.

NO MORE Week is being observed March 2-8, with events being planned locally in Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties by the YWCA Wheeling.

Liz Handzus, director of marketing and development for YWCA Wheeling, explained that, unfortunately, the numbers pertaining to domestic violence and sexual assault incidents do seem to be rising. But it is hard to determine just how much, she added.

“Things aren’t reported well,” she said. “The stats show an increase, but it is unknown by how much. There is an epidemic of people not reporting. Many are scared to report, and it’s a difficult subject to encounter.”

The goal of NO MORE Week is to bring together individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

“Every week we celebrate NO MORE Week and bring attention to sexual assault and domestic violence,” Handzus added. “Since it aligns with our message, we do things to commemorate NO MORE Week each year.”

YWCA Wheeling is inviting the public to the following events, which are free and open to attend.

– Wetzel County: from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 3 at the Lewis Wetzel Family Center.

“Other organizations will be attending,” Handzus said of the Wetzel County event.. “There will be martial arts and cardio-drumming as well.”

Participants will be drumming on an inflatable exercise ball.

“It’s like an exercise class, but with mental health awareness,” Handzus said.

– Marshall County: from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 4 at the Marshall County Courthouse.

“Advocates will be there with coffee and cookies, providing awareness of our resources,” she continued.

– Ohio County: from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5 at the Ohio County Public Library.

Community members are invited to stop by, enjoy coffee, and learn more about services available to individuals and families affected by domestic and sexual violence at each of the events.

YWCA Wheeling staff will be on hand to provide information, answer questions, and share ways the community can get involved in prevention efforts, Handzus noted.
