ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Ohio Valley Mall had a successful first week after reopening its doors to the public Tuesday.

After more than two months of being closed, the mall reopened to the residents of the Ohio Valley with precautions in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Joe Bell, spokesman for the mall’s parent Cafaro Co., said the reopening exceeded officials expectations.

“We knew that it would be difficult for everyone to get up and running after being shut down for so long, but everyone’s worked hard and managed to make a success out of it so far,” he said.

More than half of the mall’s stores are now open including Boscov’s, Dunhams’ Sports, Buckle, Michael’s, New Dimensions Comics, Rapture Vapor, Books-A-Million, Finish Line, King’s Jewelry, I Adore CBD and more. Additionally, many of the mall’s restaurants are now open for carryout services including Garfield’s, Osaka and Fabio’s Pizza. A complete list is available on the mall’s website and Facebook page.

Bell said additional retailers are expected to reopen this weekend.

“It’s been a slow ramp-up, but we expected that to be the case,” he said.

Since reopening, some of the retailers have implemented changes to their operating hours. Mall officials recommend calling ahead to check an individual store’s new hours.

There has been a “steady stream” of customers coming through the mall since the reopening, Bell said.

“That’s the best we could hope for,” he said. “We are seeing steady traffic from people who are tired of being cooped up and tired of not visiting and socializing, but everyone is being very respectful and we’re going to stick to all the precautions we’ve put out there to make sure everyone feels healthy and comfortable coming in.”

The mall and its retailers have taken extra precautions to ensure the safety of its employees and customers — extra deep cleaning practices have been implemented, barriers are set up to encourage social distancing and employees are wearing facial coverings.
