Memorial Day weekend services and events slated

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — For those looking to get out and about on Memorial Day weekend there are some options available across Belmont County.

According to Belmont County Tourism Council, a few communities are planning public services and observances this year.

For example, in Barnesville, the Barnesville Elks Lodge 1699 is set to host a Memorial Day Breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Monday. There is a cost for the general public, but the meal is free for veterans. For more information, call 740-425-9181.

In the village of Belmont, a Memorial Day parade is being planned for 10 a.m. Monday. For those who would like to be in the parade, line-up begins at 9 a.m. in front of the old school. A service will be held at the Tri-State Military Veterans Museum/Post 312.

In Bellaire, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans are all coming together to hold a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday. The scheduled speaker is Bellaire native James Johnson, a retired U.S. Marine veteran.

John Purtiman, member of the Belmont County Veterans Board, said the veteran groups did not hold a ceremony last year because of COVID-19 concerns. He noted the groups like to collaborate on this event because they are all veterans.

“This is for all the veterans,” he noted.

In St. Clairsville, the American Legion is slated to hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery, 211 Maple Ave., St. Clairsville.

In the village of Bethesda, a Memorial Day parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. Monday. For those wanting to be a part of the parade, line-up begins at 10:30 a.m. at Lake and Virginia streets behind the Bethesda Market & Carryout. A service will follow at the village’s plaza.

The village of Flushing’s Memorial Day ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Monday at Rock Hill Cemetery. This event is being hosted by the American Legion Riders Post 366.

In Barton, Memorial Day services are slated to be held at the Honor Corner near the fire station in Barton at 10 a.m. Monday. There will be a program and speaker lasting about 30 minutes. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call the firehouse at 740-695-3029.

Also, the Friends of Barkcamp Ice Cream Social is set for 5 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Barkcamp State Park’s barn area. Not only do people get to enjoy sweet treats in the great outdoors, but they will also be helping a worthy cause.

Proceeds from the sales of root beer floats and ice cream with sprinkles will benefit the playgrounds and other improvement projects at the park.

BELMONT COUNTY

Barnesville will host a Memorial Day breakfast 7-11 a.m. at the Barnesville Elks Lodge 1699; admission is free to veterans. For more information, call 740-425-9181.

Barnesville American Legion invites the community to services at the memorial plaza at 11 a.m. Monday. The parade begins at 10:45 at Dairy Queen and will arrive at the plaza, where there will be guest speakers, a special military tribute and 21-gun salute to honor all servicemen and servicewomen who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

The village of Belmont will hold its annual Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday. Line-up will be at 9 a.m. in front of the old school.

Bethesda will hold a parade at 11 a.m. Monday with line-up at 10:30 a.m. at Lake and Virginia streets. The parade will travel through town to the plaza for the service.

Flushing’s Rock Hill Cemetery will host a ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday. The American Legion Riders Post 366 will conduct the ceremony.

Memorial Day services return at the Honor Corner near the fire station in Barton at 10 a.m. Monday. There will be a program and speaker.

Neffs American Legion Post 77 will have a Memorial Day program at 2 p.m. Sunday. The speaker will be Bob Farmer, past commander of the St. Clairsville American Legion and a U.S. Air Force Veteran during the Vietnam era. A luncheon will be served.

HARRISON COUNTY

Sally Buffalo Park will host a Memorial Day event at 1 p.m. Saturday with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a bicycle parade at 3 p.m. with line-up at 2:30 p.m. by the office. A golf cart parade will be held at 5 p.m. with line-up at 4:30 p.m. There will be live entertainment by Code Red from 7-10 p.m.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Longview Cemetery in New Athens.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery in Cadiz, 274 Charleston St., with everyone invited to the Cadiz American Legion at 336 E. Spring St, Cadiz, for lunch afterward.

Scio American Legion will begin a parade at 9 a.m. Monday at the legion, 38175 Crimm Road, followed by a 10 a.m. service at Grandview Cemetery. The auxiliary at the Scio American Legion will also offer breakfast at 10 a.m.

At 11 a.m. Monday, a service will be conducted at the historic cannon at the Gateway Memorial Park.

At noon Monday, the Sherrodsville Cemetery in Sherrodsville will also host a service.

MONROE COUNTY

At 11 a.m. Monday, the Woodsfield VFW will hold a service at the Oaklawn Cemetery.

At 10 a.m. Monday, the Hannibal American Legion will hold a service at the Hannibal Locks and Dam at the Ohio River.

At 11 a.m. Monday, the Beallsville American Legion will hold a service at the legion, 52651 Broad St.
