Nickles employee dies in workplace accident
MARTINS FERRY — A Nickles Bakery employee died in a “workplace accident” Monday morning in Martins Ferry.
Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland said a call came in to the department just after 9 a.m. regarding an employee being trapped under a piece of heavy equipment.
It was determined that the employee, whose name has not been released, was dead on first responders’ arrival.
Martins Ferry Police Department, Martins Ferry Fire Department and EMS, Colerain EMS and the Belmont County Coroner were on scene throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
McFarland said no further information was being released about the incident as of Monday afternoon.
Phil Gardner, vice president of marketing for Nickles Bakery, said the bakery was closed immediately after the accident occurred. He said it is “too early to determine” when the bakery will reopen.
Gardner read a statement on behalf of the company:
“There was an accident at our Martins Ferry bakery this morning. We started an investigation as soon as the accident happened. OCEA (Office of Commercial and Economic Analysis) has been informed. Until we know more details, we cannot comment on the accident,” he said.
