Intoxicants may have been factor in fatal crash

BELMONT COUNTY — One man was killed and two others were hospitalized as the result of a two-car crash Saturday night, believed to have been caused by an intoxicated driver going the wrong way on Ohio Route 7.

Police say that a car was driving the wrong way on Ohio 7 near Pinch Run Road and mile marker 14, striking another car head-on. A release from the OSHP says that alcohol or drugs are believed to have been a factor in the crash.

One man, the passenger in the struck vehicle, was killed as a result of the crash. Both drivers suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, according to OR&W Fire District Acting Chief John Shaver.

The driver going the wrong way was taken to the East Ohio Regional Hospital, while the driver of the struck vehicle was taken to Wheeling Hospital. The identities of the driver and the deceased were not released as of Sunday.

“There was some very bad (damage) to the cars, and from what we saw of (the drivers) they suffered some broken bones, broken arms, broken ankles,” Shaver said. “Nothing life-threatening.”

In addition to OR&W and the OSHP, the Neffs Volunteer Fire Department, the Bellaire and Shadyside police departments and Belmont County Sheriff’s Office assisted in responding to the crash.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
