‘Barn Artist’ paints murals to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary

NEW PITTSBURGH, Ohio — Scott Hagan, better known as the Barn Artist, is taking on a new project to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

For his most recent project, the Jerusalem resident partnered with the state of Ohio on a statewide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America’s founding in 2026. He painted the newly released America 250 logo on a barn on U.S. 250 in New Pittsburgh, Ohio. Hagan started the project last week and said it took him six days to complete.

During the project, Hagan faced lightning, rain and hail. He also said that tornado sirens went off in the area.

“Overall it didn’t get bad there. It was just a big display of power and awe,” he said.

For this project, Hagan partnered with America 250-Ohio, a nonprofit organization based in Columbus that is creating Ohio’s celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.

The barn belongs to the Rice family, members of which have been farming on the same land since 1818.

Hagan plans to paint more barns across the state with the America 250 logo. The National America 250 Commission has encouraged all U.S. states and territories to form state commissions and to make the 250th anniversary celebration the largest and most inclusive celebration in U.S. history.

Hagan was previously hired to paint barns for the state of Ohio’s 200th anniversary in 2003. He started the work in 1999 when he was 19 years old.

In addition to painting barns, Hagan also paints murals for schools and gymnasiums. By next week he plans to paint a mural inside Buckeye Local School’s gymnasium.

Hagan said he is unsure if he will take on the project this week or next week. He said he has an outdoor project scheduled for this week and the mural in the gymnasium scheduled for next week, but he might switch the two projects depending on the weather.

Hagan said he has done murals at many local schools in the past.

“I’ve done Monroe County schools’ gym, and I did the cafeteria and hallways in Belmont Career Center,” he said.

Hagan said he is planning on painting a mural for Tyler County Schools next month.

“It’s going to be my biggest gym project yet,” he said.

He also plans to paint a mural for Union Local School District but said that the project is still in the early stages of planning.

Hagan said he has been painting signs and murals for 26 years. He said he got into the mural painting business after painting his father’s barn at a young age.

Most of his work is located in Ohio, but he said that his artwork can be found in 21 or 22 states.
