Belmont County coalition team up for suicide prevention month
BRIDGEPORT — September is recognized nationwide as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma and offering hope to individuals and families affected by suicide.
Belmont County Partners in Prevention Coalition are joining communities across the country to shine a light on the importance of talking about mental health, knowing the signs of suicide and sharing resources for those in need.
“Suicide impacts people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. By coming together as a community, we can break down the stigma around mental health and remind people that help is always available,” said Wendy Ware, prevention specialist and coalition coordinator.
Throughout the month, the Belmont County Partners in Prevention Coalition will be sharing resources, information and messages of hope across the community. The coalition’s efforts focus on encouraging open conversations about mental health and suicide while connecting residents to lifesaving support.
One critical resource is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a free and confidential service available 24/7 for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, emotional distress, or thoughts of suicide. By simply dialing 988, callers are connected with trained crisis counselors who can provide immediate support and guidance.
“Talking about suicide does not cause it, staying silent can,” Ware added. “We want to normalize these conversations so people know it’s okay to ask for help and to offer support to others.”
Belmont County Partners in Prevention Coalition invites community members to take part in awareness activities throughout September, learn about available resources, and join in efforts to build a healthier, more supportive community for all.
