Shadyside levies will be on back of ballot

SHADYSIDE — The Shadyside Village Council is informing residents voting in the Nov. 4 election that all three of the village’s levies will be on the back of the ballot.

Current council member and Mayoral candidate Mike Meintel said that he recently voted early and realized that all three levies for the village are located on the back of the ballot and he wants to make it clear to residents to turn over the ballot after voting for council and Mayor candidates.

The three levies are a 1.9-mill levy, which amounts to $9 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value of a property for five years; 2.5 mills, or $12 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value for five years; and 1.35 mills, or $47 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value for five years.

The 2.5- and 1.9-mill levies are renewal levies that will collect money based on previous assessments. The 1.35-mill levy is a replacement levy that will begin to be collected in 2026 and will collect money based on current value assessments.

Law director Kelly Kotur said that monies generated from all three levies will go to the villages’ general fund.

“The general fund has to fund all of the funds of the village. You can’t take money from the police fund to fund the street department, but you can take money from the general fund to pay into other funds. And the general fund is critically important to the operations of the village,” Kotur said.

She added that all three levies are incredibly important in raising revenue for the village.

Council member Melanie Haswell then made a motion for the village to transfer the $850 left in its Swamberg sign fund to the Shadyside Park District committee who recently agreed to pay for the repairs needed of the sign.

The sign will roughly cost $20,000 to repair, but council members Haswell, Lisa Duvall and Sam Carpino created a special committee to fund the repairs before the Park District decided to take over the responsibilities of repairing the sign.

“I make a motion to pass the remaining amount over to the Shadyside Parks District, because they’re purchasing that huge sign so they should take the rest of what we have in the account,” Haswell said.

The motion was passed unanimously.

On Wednesday afternoon, council made the decision to change the village’s trick-or-treat from Thursday to Friday from 6-7:30 p.m. due to the weather forecast predicting rain.
