SHADYSIDE — The village of Shadyside will welcome Mike Meintel as its new mayor following his victory Tuesday night in the village’s elections.
The current council member defeated former council member Nick Ferrelli with 676 votes for Meintel against 253 for Ferrelli.
Meintel is a former warden of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Correctional Reception Center and a U.S. Army Reserves veteran. He thanked the residents who voted for him in this election.
“It will be my privilege serving the residents of Shadyside. You also elected six highly qualified council members that I will work alongside to make Shadyside a community that we all can be proud of,” Meintel said.
He then said he is going to ask for the village’s patience in the beginning of his term due to it being his first time serving as mayor.
“There may be some growing pains getting the village back onto a solid foundation,” he said.
Meintel added that he wishes Ferrelli good luck with any future endeavors that he may choose to pursue.
“I have said all along throughout this campaign that myself and council cannot do this by ourselves, we need the community to be our partner,” Meintel said. “We want to hear from you.”
He added that similar to his time working as a warden, he will be on call 24/7 and would answer not only for village employees, but for residents as well.
While running for mayor, Meintel said that his biggest goal is to restore professionalism back into the village’s government.
“We need to get back to basics and professionalism. I promise you it will start with me from the way we hold council meetings. Everything will be done professionally, and people will be held accountable,” he previously said.
In addition to a mayoral race, all six seats of village council were up for grabs in Shadyside.
According to the Belmont County Board of Elections election night total, current council members Melanie Haswell, Brandon Parr, Robert “Bushwacker” Gorrell, Lisa Duvall and Sam Carpino were re-elected.
Haswell received 586 votes, Parr received 498 votes, Gorell received 463 votes, Duvall received 387, and Carpino received 329. Newcomer John Longwell received 665 votes naming him the sixth council member.
Write-In candidates Robert Dorris and Carol Givens votes were not individually totaled as of midnight Wednesday, but there were a total of 572 write-in votes were cast.
