Cast ballots today

Residents of eastern Ohio, you have a job to do today.

This is Election Day, and all registered voters have the opportunity to make their voices heard. Citizens 18 and older have the right — and the responsibility — to cast their ballots and be a part of our democratic process.

Across the local portion of our state, residents will choose new officeholders and decide whether to approve a variety of measures. In addition, there are three statewide issues to consider.

Issue 3, a constitutional amendment that would legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use, has dominated advertising and headlines, but there is much more to consider on ballots throughout the area.

Issue 2 seeks to bar amendments that would create monopolies in the state, potentially conflicting with Issue 3’s provision to allow just 10 approved marijuana growing facilities in Ohio. If both issues pass, a legal battle likely will result.

Issue 1, meanwhile, would change the way the state redraws legislative districts following each U.S. Census.

Local residents get to select school board members, mayors, council members, township trustees and other government officials.

Other ballot questions include municipal income taxes, property taxes to fund new schools, levies to fund local police and fire department operations and more.

Belmont County voters have three countywide issues to decide. In Harrison County, a 38-year bond issue for school construction in the Harrison Hills School District and an additional 10-year levy for operations of the health department top the ballot.

Steubenville is seeking an increased income tax, and all Jefferson County voters are being asked to renew a levy in support of Eastern Gateway Community College.

In Monroe County, several township levies are on the ballot.

All of these are important decisions, so take your work seriously. Make time to visit your local polling place today and cast your vote.
