Restore teachers to posts

A staffing situation at Swiss Hills Career Center in Monroe County needs to be resolved quickly and completely.

Earlier this year, Switzerland of Ohio Local School District administrators made allegations that two teachers in the center’s heavy equipment department had violated school policy and the law. They filed a criminal complaint alleging that the men in question had operated heavy equipment outside the designated safety zone on campus and had taken firewood without permission.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office investigated, and the county prosecutor determined no criminal activity had occurred.

That wasn’t good enough for the school board, which hired a private investigator to dig into the matter further. While the investigation was ongoing, the teachers remained employed but were transferred to other positions.

In the end, the third-party investigator made the same determination as the sheriff’s investigators — no evidence of wrongdoing was found.

As the situation has unfolded, students and their parents, as well as members of the teachers’ union and other county residents, have called for the teachers names’ to be cleared and for the men to be reinstated to their original teaching positions in the heavy equipment operators program.

The board has responded that it have no control over that issue. Members say teaching assignments are at the discretion of the administration.

Since no evidence of wrongdoing was found, we believe the teachers should be returned to their positions in the heavy equipment program. If the administrators opt not to do that, they need to give the public a reason why.
