CHEERS to the students at Union Local Elementary School for being the top fundraising group for the Operation Toy Lift effort held earlier this month at the Ohio Valley Mall. 125 years of service

During its more than 100 years of service, the Women’s Club of Steubenville and its members have taken multiple opportunities to make a difference in the community. They demonstrated that dedication this month when they donated $60,000 to area organizations. The money — which was distributed in six, $10,000 donations — will assist groups that work to help residents in many ways. From working to preserve history to improving health care for the underserved, to bringing events to downtown, the dollars will be put to good use. That money is always needed and much-appreciated. Buckle up every time

For most people, putting on a seat belt shortly after sitting down in a vehicle is simply habit — and that’s as it should be. But too many still ignore data that shows wearing a seat belt can save lives … and ignore that it is against the law not to wear one. According to Ohio State Highway Patrol data, there have been 2,847 people killed in Ohio since 2018 who were not wearing a seat belt. “Properly buckling up, every time you get into a motor vehicle reduces the risk of sustaining serious injuries or death in a crash,” said Col. Charles A. Jones, patrol ...

Help others this holiday

It is one thing to be told there is anecdotal evidence the need for support of food banks is only growing. It is quite another to learn there is hard proof. According to a report by the Ohio Capital Journal, Ohio food banks are seeing record-breaking amounts of need. According to the Southeast Ohio Foodbank, approximately 1 in 6 people in the region are affected by food insecurity. “Rising food prices, the end of SNAP Emergency Allotments, wage ...

Ohio leading the way

Ohio has always been an innovator in transportation. Last week that continued as the Buckeye State celebrated the opening of the country’s first electric vehicle fast-charging station funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. “Any industry that focuses on innovations for the future is a priority for Ohio,” Gov. Mike DeWine said Wednesday, according to a report by WANE. “Electric vehicles are the future of transportation, and we want drivers in Ohio to have access to this technology today.” It is the first of many, but the charging station in the London ...

Consequences of hate

Though the events of Oct. 7 brought fresh awareness to the scope of antisemitism in this country, researchers say such hate has been on the rise for quite some time. In the U.S. antisemitic incidents increased by 35% between 2021 and 2022. Certainly, we know more people have felt freer to express their hatreds — and perhaps even act upon them — in recent years. That boldness has done its damage to younger generations. In Canton, a 13-year-old boy has been charged with allegedly planning a mass shooting of a local Jewish synagogue. The Associated Press reports court documents show ...
