Alumni game makes fall memories

Dear Editor,

On Oct. 15 at the Irish Youth Complex in Bellaire, Ohio, a unique and special occasion took place.

This fall, St. John Central High School found itself without the ability to field a football team. The boys had the ability to play at Bellaire High and Martins Ferry High due to their places of residence. However, this left St. John without the typical homecoming celebration.

Next came a unique idea by a dedicated alumnus. Jeff Lowe decided that with some planning and hard work, St. John could still celebrate a homecoming full of great memories.

At noon on a beautiful October day, St. John hosted its first alumni flag football game. Thanks to all the following for making this happen:

The Paolina family for their continued generosity of the Irish Youth Complex, the faculty, alumni and volunteers who donated food, worked concessions, parking lot, prepared the filed, cheered and participated in the flag football game, and last but not least, the Buckeye Local Marching Band. This organization took their Saturday to march through Bellaire, escorting the homecoming court, playing the national anthem, performing a half time show, playing the St. John’s Fight Song numerous times and helping SJC celebrate a much different but memorable Homecoming Day.

As an alumna of the SJC Marching Band, it was heartwarming to hear and see this happen. As we thanked the students for their time, they replied, “Thank you for having us.” What a wonderful act of kindness and thoughtfulness these students provided. Please know it is truly appreciated.

St. John Central is a faith-based, affordable private school that remains hopeful for the future. On behalf of the SJC family, thanks to all who continue to work and strive for the existence and success of St. John Central.

Sincerely,

Carol Lemasters
