Dear Editor,

Endorsements from the police for a political candidate are rare, and I’m honored to be the only local candidate endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1 for the 2020 election. Men and women who choose a law enforcement career are choosing one of the world’s most dangerous professions. They are choosing to protect people they seldom know and oftentimes giving their own lives to keep our community safe.

In the last couple years, their job has become even more dangerous and thankless. There are many places we should be cutting government waste, but our police and other first responders should be adequately funded. Calls across the country to “defund the police” are misguided at best.

State-of-the-art equipment and the best possible training ensure the safety of our police, the innocent and even the guilty. For instance, body and dash cams give both the officers and the public the protection of visual proof. As for training, no two situations are ever the same. So the best thing we can do is provide top-notch, consistent training. These things cost money, and it will be money well-spent for the betterment of our valley.
