Reunite families

Dear Editor,

We are deeply concerned about families in our congregations and communities that are being separated and penalized by current immigration law. Spouses of U.S. citizens are the highest priority for legal immigration, yet many families continue to face obstacles that make it impossible for both parents to live in the United States, even when the spouse and/or children are citizens. Such policies are devastating to the well-being of the children. All separation from a parent is traumatic to a child.

The American Families United Act, which was introduced in the last Congress, would allow the opportunity for spouses of citizens to apply for a waiver to remain in or return to the United States. Congress has already squandered opportunities to include these provisions in recent legislation, specifically as amendments to the Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act.

We strongly encourage legislators to take urgent action so that families can be reunited. The children cannot wait.
