Rethinking support for Israel

Dear Editor,

The people were penned in a densely populated area with almost no food, fuel, or other necessities.

They were then attacked with all the weapons of a modern army; their housing was blown up and burned, with thousands dying, many of them women and children.

Sound like Gaza?

No, we’re describing the Warsaw ghetto in 1943. The Nazis were determined to eradicate Jewish people and used every weapon at their disposal, with no regard for human life.

Today, eighty years later, we are seeing similar actions by Israelis intent on eradicating Hamas, with similar lack of regard for human life.

They provide transparently false excuses for the death of thousands of civilian casualties.

“It was an errant Islamic Jihad rocket hitting the adjacent parking lot that caused the destruction of the five story hospital full of patients” (this despite the fact that many of the cars in the lot survived unscathed.) “The multi-story apartment buildings that were destroyed in the refugee camp were a result of Hamas tunnel collapses.” “Palestinians will be safe if they move south” (even though they are bombing in Gaza’s south.)

This campaign by Israel, and their opposition to the two-state solution, is only possible because of our “unwavering support” in the form of trillions of dollars of aid and military equipment. They have been the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid for the last eighty years.

Maybe we should re-think that support!
