Shelter help sought by volunteer

Dear Editor,

A letter to Harrison County residents:

I am a volunteer for the Humane Society of Harrison County’s Animal Shelter.

The building they are leasing has been surveyed to be sold and their lease is up this coming spring. They need assistance from the county and the residents to secure a place for a new shelter.

This shelter has enabled them to triple the amount of abused or abandoned animals compared to all the prior years. This shelter has also enabled TNVR (trap, neuter, vaccinate and return) over 100 community cats this year alone.

One cat can have up to five litters per year!

Their TNVR program alone has contributed to controlling the cat population in our county.

If they cannot secure a place for a new shelter they will have to again rely on volunteers to foster these animals at their homes and farms which will reduce their impact.

They also have a low cost spay neuter program EVERY month for dogs and cats. All of this is volunteer based!

This small group of dedicated volunteers have accomplished all of this through fundraising, grants and donations for years.

The donations have greatly reduced due to the state of the economy.

Now they require the county’s assistance to continue to provide these services.

Please contact the county Commissioners and ask them to help the Humane Society so they can continue to help the community!

Their next board meeting is Thursday, November 30th, at 5 p.m., and their annual meeting is Thursday, December 7th, at 5 p.m. Both are being held at their shelter, located at 84033 Mizer Road.

I ask that you attend these meetings.
