Mental health stigma
Dear Editor,
We need to address the stigma against mental illnesses and related areas.
People with mental illnesses aren’t faking anything. They are debilitating and can cause problems with physical health if left untreated. This shows up in headaches, fatigue, a weakened immune system, and increased risk for diabetes and heart disease.
In addition to individual health, mental illnesses create difficulties forming meaningful relationships, being productive at work, and being motivated at school. Instead of judging others when they exhibit behavior one might typically think of as “lazy” or “rude,” we should take the time to understand what’s going on in their lives.
Social connection is important to everyone, whether they realize it or not. Reach out to someone and you’ll find that you have severely misjudged them and their actions.
Having preconceived notions about what it means to be mentally ill and believing that it can be overcome easily with sunlight, exercise, or healthy foods underestimates the impact of a disorder on someone’s life. Mental illnesses are often chronic, and the best thing you can do for someone struggling is be there for them.
We can’t keep judging people based on assumptions and biases we have. We can’t keep isolating people that need support. Please educate yourself about mental illnesses and their effects. We can help make the world a nicer place for everyone if we have some empathy.
