Ohio Supreme Court

Dear Editor, One of the most important and consequential decisions that will be made this November will be that of the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. The most qualified candidate for that huge responsibility is Justice Sharon Kennedy. Justice Kennedy’s Judicial Philosophy is judicial restraint. Kennedy decides only what is necessary to resolve the legal matter, says what the law says, — not what it should be — and decides cases based on the Constitution — not personal or political views. Ohio needs stability and predictability of the law in our court system. ...

Absolute power, REALLY?

Dear Editor, I’m writing this in response to Mr. Bill Bryant’s letter of October 16, 2022, complaining about the Republican Party’s majority of officeholders in Belmont County and based on the quote by Lord Acton that they are somehow corrupt! His letter to the editor decries how the Republicans in Belmont County are occupying most offices in the county and the county seat (St. Clairsville). His complaint, which is “true to form” for Democrats when they do not have a valid argument, is to give us an emotionally charged slogan in lieu of a well framed argument: “Power ...

Serving as your state representative

Dear Editor, Serving the community I grew up in has been the honor of my lifetime. What I’ve seen lacking in Columbus is common sense, hard workers and a love for American values — things the Ohio Valley was built on, and things I’ve focused on bringing to Columbus. The common sense part was my first fight, and I focused on it during my first six months in office. In June 2021, it was my House Concurrent Resolution 21 which ended Ohio’s state of emergency. The concept was pretty simple. Families were struggling and far too many businesses had closed — never to be ...

Reevaluating utopias

Dear Editor, World literature is full of portrayals of Utopias. Each author depicted what he imagined to be unique about each phantasmagorical land. The Emerald Tablets depict a technologically advanced culture on Atlantis. There is a short section in Genesis where Eden was the ideal society. In Exodus, we are presented with documentation of our ET overlords helping humanity to spiritually evolve. There is Sir Thomas More’s Utopia from the Middle Ages emphasizes merit. During the Elizabethan era, Francis Bacon gave us the educated population of The New Atlantis. We have an inkling of ...

Mike DeWine shorts Ohio voters and Ohio history

Dear Editor, Regardless of political party, it’s critical to schedule a debate between Ohio’s gubernatorial candidates. A debate between these two candidates helps voters decide which candidate best aligns with their values, particularly on women’s issues. Women represent just over half the total population in Ohio. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 70% of voting age women were registered to vote in 2018 and that percentage has increased an additional six percent this year. These metrics are developing as Ohio crosses an historic threshold — the first ...

Absolute power

Dear Editor, “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This proverbial declaration provides that as a person’s or political party’s power becomes increasingly dominant their morality decreases. It appears to me that the Belmont County Republicans hold on power is absolute. Let’s check out the Republican Party’s absolute grip on power in Belmont County, Ohio. They hold or dominate the following elected seats and patronage that goes with those powerful seats: ∫ All three Belmont County Commissioners ∫ St. Clairsville Mayoral and Council. (Even ...
